if someone was letting me stay at their house, I wouldn't get a $50 bottle of scotch, since the whisky is pretty mediocre at best at that price point

It’s a good thing you edited.

Good single malts start at $40-60 for 12 year.

Yep. I stopped drinking 12 yr scotch for the most part. I drink a lot of bourbon and save my scotch purchases for the pricier ones. Most of the 12 years aren't that special to me, which is why I made my original post, but then I did remember a few that I liked.

Compared to Scotch, bourbon has very little variation in my opinion

Maybe, maybe not i don’t think so but it’s been discussed plenty on this board, “taste is subjective”
Obviously they both have their own unique characteristics, which is kind of the point. I think it’s very difficult to pick a bottle of any whiskey for someone else, especialy
if you don’t know what they enjoy or drink
If they all tasted the same it would be easy

Hell I if I had to buy a bottle for someone I wasn’t sure about I’d get Balvenie Double Wood 12yr lil more than 50 but it’s
kind of the best of both world IMO

Yep, after I gave it some thought, that's the one that I recommended as well. Very good for the price and doesn't really kick you in the face with strong flavors that might turn some folks off.
