I’ve watched a half dozen YouTube videos on the merits of each method, so what is the FD board’s view on this? Tips and tricks also appreciated. TIA

I don't think I've ever had them steamed.

If done right, steamed. All I ever knew was boiled until one fateful night a baw that ran his own traps showed me something new. Had a fresh steamed batch of crab he brought over that blew my mind. My oldest daughter who can be a picky eater could not get enough. Few weeks later he showed me how he does it.
Take your Turkey boiling pot or whatever you use, put 2 bricks in the bottom. Fill water to top of bricks, 1/2 to 1 cup seasoning in water. Layer crabs in basket belly down sprinkle seasoning on top. Continue to layer your crabs this way with seasoning on each layer. Bring water to boil with lid on. Put basket of crab in pot on top of bricks, put lid back on. Steam approximately 13 minutes then remove basket. Allow to cool and eat like a king.

Boston does steam blue crabs.

I like them steamed also, I've noticed that in the steaming process you don't have nearly as many loose claws. They stay on the crabs.

Good shite. I parboil them first.

I find that unlike crawfish, crabs soaking in seasoned water will not absorb much flavor.
So steaming might be the less messy way to go, but I haven’t made myself do it that way yet. It just feels way too yankee for me.

Is there really much of a difference? I've never had them steamed that I can remember

I put my live crabs in the seasoned water before I turn burner on. Then I bring to a boil, etc.
Rarely lose claws. I attribute the ones I lose to knocking off with a the paddle.
Learned years ago (at least for me) they blast off when you drop the live crabs in boiling water.
You can also avoid losing the claws by chilling them to the point they are not moving anymore, then putting in the boiling water.

I actually like them grilled. Put a little butter in the cavity and it is really good.
