This is better than some gumbos I've eaten that folks spent hours on.

You must know some bad gumbo making people because this stuff was awful.

A lot of what we experience is based on expectations. This far exceeded what I expected so I was very satisfied. Give it a shot.

It was far below my expectations which were already low. I wasn't expecting it to be as bad as it was, though. I wouldn't put a single shrimp in that stuff. Shrimp deserve better.

We could probably have a 10 page thread on bad gumbo served in restaurants. This is better than those.

No one is saying it is gourmet. Numerous companies make a lot of money selling these gumbo bases: in boxes, in envelopes, whatever.....Relative to that type of competition it is good. You didn't like it, fine. For what it is, canned gumbo base ready in 15 mins, my opinion is that it is better than its competition.

I had gumbo made from one of those box things one time. It was awful.

I'm just picky about gumbo, though, so don't pay me any mind. It's not worth eating for me unless it tastes darn good.

I opened the can of base and to see a big old oil slick on the top of it. I removed as much of that as I could.

That's why the can says to shake well before opening

I wanted to see it the way it came into the world.

The only Blue Runner base I've tried is the Red Beans. I do doctor it up and add the Trinity, garlic, and sausage that I brown in a pan first. It's hard to beat & is a fast, cheap, hearty meal.

Seems like the étouffée, gumbo, etc. have mixed reviews in this thread.

Try the white beans too. Same recipe', cept go onions only. Just as good. I mix one can regular per one can Blue Runner.

The red and white beans are workable. The gumbo is not.

Blue Runner???

Never heard of this, sad to say.

I assume it is just a brand like Douget's or Savoie's? Can it be had in Texas?

I need to buy some for the name alone.

Blue Runner Website
Not sure if they have it in Texas. It comes from Gonzales, LA.
I usually eat their creole cream style redbeans once a week.

Any particular reason why you would bump a year old Blue Runner thread on your first post Clark?
