Without knowing your budget its hard to point you in the right direction. This Wustof set is a great starter set. We got it 9 years ago when we got married and still use it. I can do everything anyone with a more expensive set can do.

Wustof 12 piece set

Chef knife

Paring knife

Utility knife

Some people want a 10+" bread knife or slicing knife

Bread knives are amazing, but you don’t need to spend more than $10 on one.

I'll go a step further and say you can expand later with 2 chef knives. One should be a German style approximately a 20 degree blade made for cutting vegetables and most meat. The other to add to your arsenal should be a Japanese style blade in the 15 degrees range for making thinner slices such as fish or tomatoes. Just make sure they are at least 8-10"

Rouge is on the right track. A semi rigid boning knife and shears are useful as well.

I said "need"

Mine is about $15 as well, but I could have easily picked one up for less than $10 and be just as happy. Then again, I don't make a ton of sandwiches, so maybe that knife would change someone's life
