In New Orleans, there are three main bakeries that supply the long, light loaves essential to our local po-boys: Leidenheimer Baking Co., John Gendusa and Alois J. Binder. Now there two. Binder bakery, located on Frenchmen Street in the Marigny, stopped delivering to its customers in August.

The last couple of times I went to the deli by my house looking for some, I was told they hadn't gotten deliveries recently. And they were forced to switch to Gendusa.

Binder was always my favorite... especially for sandwiches at home. A hunk of Binder french bread, Chisesi's VIP Ham, some colby jack, Blue Plate Mayo, a Barq's and a Hubig's. Now, two of that can't happen anymore.

Get back to me if Leidenheimer gets into trouble. Until then I am good.

Sad to see this. I can remember my dad swinging by and picking up a couple hot loaves— and me eating a bit off one end before we reached home. Looked like someone dropped a box of breadcrumbs in the car.

Binder's bread is/was(?) far superior to Leidenheimers. Sad if it's closed for good.

Lots of really good bakeries in the city now. Imagine being pigeonholed into German (french) Bread probably is taking a toll when the market is changing.

I dont Think the demand for P.O. boys has gone down any.

Can you name any restaurants that used this Baker? Just for reference.

Honestly don't know if I ever ate anything from there. Just looked at the pics online and if they are one of the 3 major bakeries in NOLA then there bread was probably at a few places.

According to another article they were mainly in grocery stores these days.

Also looks like they may not have paid their taxes

Late in 2017, the city of New Orleans sued the bakery for back taxes from 2014 to 2016, court records show. On June 19, the court ordered the bakery to pay $50,342.

Per the Advocate

That's probably sales and property taxes. Sales taxes on what they sold in their retail bakery.

Rocky n Carlos claims they provided bread for them for decades. But I saw it mostly in groceries. I do think it was better than Leidenheimer.

Court records say they owed over $50k in back taxes to City of NO
