Will be coming in Friday afternoon for the Tool concert and was curious what some of the locals would recommend in the area. Nothing fancy, just good solid food and a good atmosphere to have a few drinks prior to the show. TIA

Lots of good options downtown, both bars and restaurants. There are places in that “Uptown” area around the BJCC, but I never go down there to eat or drink.

Bistro 218 is a good bar/restaurant I used to enjoy when I worked downtown. The Redmont hotel has a rooftop bar. Cafe Dupont is on the nicer side of things down there. All of those are along 20th street north or Richard Arrington Blvd.

I'm not sure what is all at Uptown anymore. Carrigan's is a decent bar, but it is a little further away.

I don’t care for any of the places Uptown (the area surrounding the BJCC) except for Eugene’s Hot Chicken but I’m not sure it’s exactly what you are looking for.

I’d consider getting out downtown towards 2nd Avenue or Morris. Paramount; Caya Coco, El Barrio, the Essential, Bamboo, or Carrigans could work.

Thanks for the replies, plans have changed and don't think I will get to town early enough to do anything but go to the show.

We’ll be staying in B’ham in a couple months for 1 night at the Sheraton near top golf. Have reservations at hot and hot. And bar recs? Saw there was a rooftop at/near the elyton. Probably hitting up some breweries downtown before dinner

Hot and Hot is good, as is that rooftop bar at the Elyton. Lots of bar options downtown. Mayawell is a pretty good tequila bar within easy walking distance to Hot and Hot.

For bar recommendations downtown, I like most of them to be honest:

Carrigans
House of Found Objects
Adios
The Collins
Pilcrow
Paper Doll
Paramount (arcade in back).

Most have websites/social media if you want to check out drink menu and vibe.

There is also a rooftop bar at the Redmont. Both leave a little to be desired.

Agree with the Mayawell recommendation.

Also, if looking for a great hole in wall, Uber to the Red Lion in Homewood.

Could also check out the Nick for dive bar/live music. It’s a shithole but worth checking out.

Go to El Barrio. Get the queso and add chorizo. Get the Carne Asada entree. Profit.

Right next door is House of Found Objects, a fun cocktail bar you can get some drinks if there is a wait.

Both are on 2nd Avenue North.

And bar recs?

House of Found Objects (cocktail bar with a 70's vibe)
Tucana Tiki (tiki bar)
Adios (Tequila bar)
Cayo Coco (rum bar & restaurant)
Collins Bar (cocktail bar)
Mayowell (tequila bar)
Lou's Pub (cocktail bar with a dive vibe, usually where most of the local bartenders end up hanging out)
Carrigan's Public House (typical Public House style joint)
The Brown Derby (dive if you are feeling karaoke)

Breweries:
Hi-Wire
Trimtab
Good People
Monday Night

There is. It is fine, nothing special though. There is another on top of the redmont hotel. Again, fine, but nothing special. If you are just feeling a rooftop experience, they will check the box.

Wings are really good. I miss living downtown and having a drink there after work.

Pizitz food hall actually has some good spots if your group wanted different options.
