So your solution to combat crime is to shut businesses down?… So blame business owners? Shut down Venezia’s? Shut down Angelo Brocato’s? These places have been on this block for almost 70+ yrs.. Bold strategy
No. It is a good reason for a business to shutter doors even if it's profitable however.
Bevi in particular was staffed mostly with family members. Always see the kids and extended family in there working. Would you want to run a family business in and around an area with increasing crime rate?

Good friend of mine works at Marjie’s as a chef. A few weeks ago he mentioned Bevi was closing and they taking it over. The story he told me was the Bevi owners are retiring. Nothing more than that. The Mid-City location made money..they just wanted to retire and enjoy their time off. The new seafood market sounds great. They will continue to boil seafood, serve gumbo’s and po-boys, but, will also be selling fresh fish/shrimp/crabs etc.

Yeah it sounds like they are also doing something pretty unique.
Also working with fisherman who only get a few of certain fish daily, maybe 5-10, and taking them off their hands.
The eater article on it is pretty good. My wife and I were just talking about the lack of great seafood markets that also double as restaurants in this city

It doesn’t sound sustainable but I hope I’m wrong.I think there are reasons fish markets are not everywhere.
Are they selling to restaurants too? Haven’t read

Pre-Covid farm raised meat was so relatively cheap that few splurged on wild caught seafood. I don't think that gap is there any more in pricing terms.

They are also 3 other restaurants involved, Marjie's, Seafood Sallys, and Carmo, so there is some built in relationships with fisherman and vendors, and the ability to use 4 places for seafood essentially.

You think Metry got their shite together when Bevi shut down that location?

You ever been to Joe Pati's in Pensacola?
How can all of Orleans Parish not support one place maybe even just 1/4 of the size of what they have there? Hell, how can't it support something akin Tony's in Baton Rouge?

In my small town of Asbury Park, we have Local 130 seafood, they started a few years ago, maybe 6 or so. I thought they wouldn't last, but they are killing it. They have retail space, and supply to a lot of restaurants around here.

Or South Harbor outside of Jacksonville. That place is in the middle of almost nowhere and is awesome, and does incredible business.

And that giant place, at least onsite, is supported by a very small amount of BR people.

Yea I know Joe pati’s.
Idk man. Seafood is expensive and the shelf life isn’t great. Like all these specialty meat places that come & go. It’s a luxury to be able to shop there.

I imagine this will be retail only and not retail/wholesale like all the other fishhouses across the city.
As long as they run it as a fishouse I don't think it will have problems. Other than a location that is probably more prime than they need it to be.

Joe patti’s relies on tourism and they have a big marine operation too. And parking, facilities etc
Not really comparable to a the shite hole that is the Bevi building. And It’s not like Mardi Gras visitors are going to stop at a seafood market

Lots of stupid in this thread. “Move out so crime can take completely over”

That entire area has gone down hill quickly over the last three years. I hope all of those places shut down until something is done about the crime.
That's a bold strategy Cotton. Shutter businesses, leave buildings empty so they become blighted------Yeah, that'll show them.
You must work for Latoya "The Destroya" Cantrell with that mindset.

I wasn’t even really trying to suggest the Bevi building as the answer to what I want and I agree that Joe Patti’s is somewhat dependent upon tourists (and that people headed to a beach house are much different than the tourists here), but probably not 3/4 dependent. Which is why I simply thought the possibility reasonable that in all of Orleans we might have ONE legit seafood market that is about 1/4 of the size of what they offer.
But hell, maybe the scale THERE is what makes it feasible and I’m doomed to shitty supermarket counters, a trek to a lot in Westwego, and the occasional fishing trip.

The building doesn't seem like that much of a shithole to me, its just small with very limited parking nearby. Very interested to see how they transform that space.
Posted on 7/13/23 at 2:09 pm to Fun Bunch
I was picking up a sack of crawfish there one time and they told me to go around the back. I poked my head into the back door looking for someone and it looked like a run down shack back there in the kitchen. And obviously the dining room doesn’t have much space. Parking sucks
I feel like people expect to go to a butcher or seafood market and pay less than what they would pay at a grocer. They don’t want to pay $10/lb for 36/40s or $21/lb for speckled trout at a market ran by dirty hipsters

My thought is this is going to be much more of a restaurant and close to what Bevi was (but probably a bit elevated) with the Fish Market as an afterthought, and its a feeder for the best fish they can buy to the other 3 restaurants they own.
