I just got a crab bisque when I went, it was pretty good. the tamales tasted like absolute dog shite, however. I don't get the hype surrounding those.

some random "Best I ever ate" Baton Rouge edition nominees...

Filet-Ruth's
Cheeseburger-Mason's or Flemming's
Appetizer-Crabmeat cheesecake, Ruffino's

Just not really a steakhouse city. Tons of excellent restaurants here. The best meal I've had here was probably at Maison Lacour, though I would do it a disservice if I listed a single dish.

I've been to some of top steakhouse in the country and ruths is still right up there. Maybe not the best I've had, but certainly in top 5.
Having said that not all ruths are created equal.
I've been to ruths in park city, atlanta, Fort Worth, Maui, Scottsdale, and Destin.
For some reason Baton Rouge ruths always seems better. Maybe it's just because I grew up going to it.
They are all good, but I think the one here does an outstanding job.
The best two steaks I've had have been at rosebud steakhouse in Chicago and bones in atlanta

The one in BR isn't a franchise location and one of only two that cut their meat in house. Dunno if that means much but it might explain it being a little better than other Ruth's

I am kind of kicking myself in the arse for not remembering the best restaurant ever in BR by name never ate there, but I do know greatness. It was the Le Ruth's of the town.

BR Dining is as good as ever, but of great meals in yesteryears gone by..

Chinese Inn circa 1976 to 1994 - When MK Wong still owned it, he had a great bunch of cooks in the kitchen. PFR, Peking Duck, Mandarin Chicken, Kung Pao, Egg Rolls,etc..on par with chinese fare found in NYC, SF,etc..

Chalet Brandt - Chef Charles Brandt when in his prime circa late 1970s to late 1980s, had BR's highest rated restaurant to hit the Michelin-esque food charts with a Mobil rating. Brought BR some European flair and fare.

Del Lago's - Mike and Linda Merriam's own recipes, amongst the many talented young chefs to pass through the kitchen, had BR's best veal dishes, shrimp and crab appetizers, twice baked potatoes,etc.. BR's own lil Studio 54, every famous star or act that played in BR dined here, often back-to-back nights.

The Village - When in it's prime, Mrs Fanny Distefano had incredible Italian fare in BR. Her son Joey would later become a noted BR chef in his own right, and serve many of her great recipes, with BR's best Fettuccine,etc..

Also of note..Two Jacks(Italian fare and also a young MK Wong as the chinese food chef), Jack Sabin's, The Place, DaJoNel's, Poet's, Maci's, etc..

My all time favorite meal in Baton Rouge was a New York strip at Mickey's Gold Nugget back around 1980. I was still a student at LSU, and I think the cost was about $15 per person with a decent bottle of wine. I couldn't believe you could get such a great meal for that price. Best date restaurant in history.

This thread made me realize that as much as I pass through BR, besides fast food, the only places I've actually eaten at in the city are BWW, Walk Ons, and South of Philly. So I'd say the Catfish Acadiana at Walk Ons wins by default.

I need to try and get to more places. Really the only time I actually stop in BR is for LSU games, and I'm cooking my own food in the lot.
