Ninfa's?
Las Palmas?
Casa Maria?
Superior?
La Carreta?

I need some suggestions for tonight, hopefully before noon so I can see about a reservation

Coyote Blues is by far the best Mexican joint in town.

Get the smoked duck appetizer with raspberry sauce for an appetizer. You are doing yourself an injustice if you do not get the steak chimichanga as your entree. Be are to pick the corn grits and southwestern potatoes as your 2 sides.

Other highly notable items include:
Ceviche
Queso dip with meat
Steak Fajitas: best in the state
Stuffed Filet: great, but why go to a Mexican joint for a filet?
Charro Beans: these have an exceptional flavor for charro beans. Get these as a side for fajitas if you end up making the mistake of not getting the chimichanga.

Coyote Blues is the beat restaurant in BR, IMO.

As soon as I saw the subject line, I knew 4lsu2 would be in here knighting for them!

Ol Josey here prefers Las Palmas, but that certainly will not be the popular opinion and I will probably get chastised for it.

It's like the Batman sign going up for me. If I didn't have to go to an outside wedding in a flash flood today, I'd come over for a steak chimichanga with corn grits and southwestern mashed potatoes.

You can have your opinion, but I will respectfully disagree with it. You do not understand my love for Coyote Blues' steak chimichanga. I'd request this dish if it I were on death row with an hour left to live.

There is not another dish in town that I cannot get anywhere else. This is what makes Coyote special to me. Let me enjoy it.

The owners of this restaurant also own Saritas on the Diversion. Very good food and not a buffet...

As a Baton Rouge native that lived in Houston for 5 years, I can say for certain that best Mexican and Baton Rouge don't go in the same sentence. Can't find fault with Ninfa's not being good, none of the ones in Houston come close to matching the original on Navigation. Coyote Blues is the best of a really meh lot.

ETA-actually, some of the little authentic taquira's are pretty good, and I haven't been to all of them. Truthfully, even in Houston, the little family run dives are the best places to hit.

I agree, i lived in california for 5 years and all of the above mentioned places blow. My favorite place is la tiendita on siegan. Its as close to "real" mexican as ive found in br. I used to love taco & burrito express, but the last few times i was there were disappointing.

I like Fernando's over on Coursey for run of the mill everyday Mexican.

Coyote Blues if I want fancy Mexican food.

However, "fancy" and "Mexican food" are not two phrases I usually associate.

Saritas has great waterfront views and you can watch the boats and they make a damn good margaritas, about 35 minutes from Baton Rouge...

I second this. Definitely a good experience with the view.
