I am an old "purist", the king cakes I grew up with were plain, with a slight anise flavor and the sugar topping, the ceramic doll was hidden inside. I love the ones with fillings, but I want a cake, not a donut. The donuts are OK, but they are something different.

Antoine's in Gretna! The best!
Second is Hi Do Vietnamese Bakery in Gretna.

I don't like fillings. I like plain, non-gloopy king cake.
My favorite was from McKenzie's, but now it's Randazzo's/Haydels depending on whether I want white icing plus crystalized sugar or not.

These are hands-down the two most underrated bakeries in all of New Orleans. Hi-Do is fricking awesome.

I agree. They are both VERY underrated. It amazes me how many people have not even heard of Hi-Do!

Made the trip across the mighty Mississippi on Saturday, paid the $1 toll. Worth every cent. Bought three king cakes, finished off two of them before the afternoon was done. Thanks for the recommendation.

I got a bad king cake from Ambrosia today.. filling in a third of the cake.. the rest of the cake was dry as cardboard.

Antoine's opened a second location in Carrollton, on S. Carrolton by Mona's.
Also, I've seen Antoine's King Cakes being sold in Walgreens (or was it Rite Aid, on Carrollton).
They are very good. Neck and neck with Randazzos, but I've never had one from Hi Ho.

First time trying the Hi-Do king cake today. My wife, who idolizes McKenzie's king cake, was thrilled. She said it was as close as she's had. (and that includes the Tastee's/McKenzies king cake)
It's a simple style with a little cinnamon. It was nice and moist and tender.
