It's the asian version of catfish that 90% of the restaurants in this state serve. It's obviously cheaper and despite the chest pounding of many who say otherwise, I can tell the difference between them, especially if I'm eating wild caught catfish.

It amazes me how many people are OK with restaurants serving swai/basa, yet if a restaurant were to serve foreign crawfish they’d blow a gasket

This.

Acme Oyster House markets themselves as a New Orleans style seafood place, but they can't even make the effort to serve local fish.

My first time I went to Hymels up the river me and a co-worker were the only two sitting in the bar area eating. We were eating shrimp and the owner, who seemed like an arse anyway, thought that he would proudly tell us that he switched to the asian catfish to save money.

Screw him.

Turn him in to the fish police

Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee have statutes requiring that the country of origin of catfish served in restaurants be clearly identified.

I don't think we have that. As long as they aren't putting in print that they are serving specifically La catfish while serving something else, they aren't breaking the law.

If you have "catfish" listed as a menu item you have to follow the law.

Accurate labeling of catfish and catfish-like species is required by law. The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act defines "catfish" for marketing purposes as members of the taxonomic family ictaluridae, commonly known as channel catfish. Asian fish such as basa, tra, swai and pangasius, on the other hand, are members of the taxonomic family pangasiidae. It is illegal to label them as "catfish" under federal law.

Well where to start. Don’t know about Acme and their “effort” to serve local fish but I would say what is local fish? If you are looking for wild local fish it is not available on that level. Maybe you catch it yourself but ACME would be out of business, as would all seafood restaurants if they depended on wild, local product.

I know James Hymel very well and the first I would say in the 40 years I’ve been going there I have never seen anyone eat at the bar. It is an old bar that is made for drinking and if you are eating at it it is the chips and peanuts behind it. I also know that he always (starting with his father) served Amite River catfish, which were the benchmark in this area as are Bayou Des Allemends, and not available on a sustainable basis so he, like a lot are buying American farm raised catfish. He buys Harvest Select out of Alabama both whole and fileted.

But you are missing what Hymels is more known for which is jumbo fried shrimp (which are bought locally) and of course the boiled crabs, which are all Louisiana and the best anywhere.

And he is an arse. If you are an arse.

I believe Hymel’s has it on their menu that they use swai/basa, but no one seems to care.

I don't particularly care for Hymel's, but they have some pretty decent prices for some of their menu options. We would go there pretty often growing up and my dad swears it's the best seafood he's ever eaten.
