I love In N Out too, but since they make it fresh on the spot, is that fast food the way we usually think of it?

from a purely fast food (chain) perspective, back yard burgers.

i would say it is. They are still pretty damn quick even with huge lines at the drive in. I kind of look at the presence of a quick drive in (not a window to pick up food that is called in) as to what makes something a fast food burger joint.

eta: even the name "In-N-Out" speaks to the essence of fast food.

so i wouldn't count it as fast food.

just b.c it is shitty, greasy, and stale doesn't make it fast food.

so asian noodle houses are fast food? What about an Italian place that has your pre-made lasagna out to you in 4.5 minutes? A cajun place that brings your bowl of gumbo out immediately? too subjective. Drive thru is the cutoff.
