Hey Dallas, I had high hopes for the Cotton Bowl, Angelo's Barbeque and going to the Rahr Brewery in your area. It is likely that I will watch the Cap-1 on television. My New Year's wish is for you to pick up the Friday's Featured Beer before it dies of inactivity. Cheers.

Absolutely. There is just so much good beer out there.

I picked Chimay because it is a great beer and widely available.

I tend to change the beers in my rotation seasonally. Summer beers are lighter and in winter I drink the heavier beers. Lately I've been enjoying Aventinus Wheat Doppelbock, Chimay and Maudite.

Like ales much????

For the OP of this thread. IPA's and Pale Ales are an EXPENSIVE acquired taste. Start out with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. It is the Bud Light of this style beer. Just a decent tasting consistent well made product. If you do no like a Sierra Nevada you will not like the more specialized Ales.

My Faves....

Plain old beer... Rolling Rock

Getting fancy Hoegaarden, Paulaner Heffeweisen, Franziskaner.... I like the Belgian/Heffe style.

Ales do have much more character and complexity the lagers, wheats and most pilsners.

Well....the Sierra Nevada is a hoppy ale. But there are ale styles that are less hoppy and more malty (amber ales, brown ales). And the belgian ales are sweet and fruity.

I didn't like Pale Ales and IPAs the first time I tried them. But I didn't like coffee or regular beer the first time I tasted them either. But I slowly became addicted to the richness of IPAs. I'm working on belgian sour ales now.

What are the IBU's of Sierra Nevada when compared to say Arrogant Bastard or Stone 90 Minute? Those are two that I find undrinkable. But I have established that Ales are not my thing.

Sweet Water makes a nice, smooth Pale Ale, a good starter IMO as well...It took me awhile to get used to Pale Ale's, and especially IPA's, but now I love them.

The only brews I don't care for are the Belgian/Heffe style beers..maybe my taste will change with time!

in the end, beer is awesome, so many different creations of it, from all over the world, and so many unique tastes!!

Sierra Nevada is relatively low on the IBU scale compared to Arrogant Bastard and Dog Fish Head 90 minute (?), neither of which are my favorites. The Arrogant Bastard has a lot of malt taste in addition to the hops. And the DFH 90 is too sweet for me. Its more of a hopped up belgian triple style rather than an american style IPA imo.

There are so many different type ales that have completely different tastes that I doubt you have tried them all. But they are going to have a stronger taste than bland lagers. I don't think I've ever had a lager that was worth a dam. Bocks and Double Bocks are good lagers but they use bottom fermenting yeast which is closer to an ale yeast.

What kind of question is this. I think my head would explode trying to answer it. If it's not spring or summer, it's seasonals for me or anything amber and no pale ales.

New Belgium Brewery - Sunshine Wheat

Try this if outside LA.
Can't get it in Louisiana. Damn liberals.
Port Royal and The Cove sometimes have it stocked.
German Wheat. Good stuff.
