Beer Wars - Jester King v De Garde

Jester King v De Garde
De Garde going after Jester King. From De Garde's Facebook page, regarding the new standards that Jester King is trying to establish.
quote:
We do not support this mark. Here is why; Consumers know what they enjoy. We may not always agree with any particular palate, but that doesn't make us right. To try to pull cachet from the traditions of others who have fought to support them though, is not just disingenuous, but capitalistic. Were most American producers of spontaneous beer attempting to emulate their Belgian brethren, one would hope that they would carry the impulse to price their beer in accordance with the actual cost of production and business operations; It is telling that good Lambic and G(u)euze is an affordable luxury at the source, even amongst new and growing producers, and merely a luxury amongst most emulating the methods here.
Likewise, it would seem obvious that the methods catering to the natural yeast and bacteria of one area would not be the ideals for a quite different environment. We believe that this movement stifles an unencumbered exploration of our environments and the ability for any new brewery to develop in favor of the attempt to capitalize on the newly resurgent love for great Belgian beer. Let's not qualify a process and by association a beer.
We spontaneously inoculate and ferment all of our beer in oak. We age it extensively. We meet all of the new guidelines. We choose not to participate.
We do not believe that an environment full of cultivated cultures removed from the natural balance is an ideal representation of terroir.
This is not an argument for kettle souring, artificial or saccharine flavors, nor any number of other things. It is not an indictment of our friends and fellow producers. None of these things are ok.
Merely; Let's explore the actual terroir of America. And let's make beer to drink.

400 people just lined up to buy oude de expulsione aged on Texas plums.

I really don't have a problem with what JK is trying to do.

They really do. They make good beer, but they kiss so much Belgian arse. This is America, dammit! And I don't give a shite what the old-school Europeans think about our beer style names.

Jax don't like his threads gayed up.

I do. They went above and beyond what was necessary and still caved to those HORAL fricks, who certainly aren't above reproach. Pretty stupid. Simply calling it American Lambic as Levi Funk was doing should have been clear and concise enough.
Pierre Tilquin makes great beer, but really comes off as a dick.

Can someone explain De Garde position? I've read that multiple times now and I really have no idea what their problem is with the label.

I agree about their post. I think the main thrust is "this is stupid, who cares? we're not changing anything". I think.

I think another point they are trying to make is that it is a marketing ploy by Jester King to set a standard that few breweries meet in order to segregate brewries and give themselves a certain snob appeal. Dr Garde is saying they don't want to play that game.
It takes somebody like Dr Garde, who meets the standards and brews beers that are just as good as Jester Kings beers to say, "No, we're not going to do that and try to put down beers that are made differently."

fify
I'm with DG here. This whole issue is utterly stupid. And also mostly because I just think JK is suspect. I don't know why, I can't ground it in anything, but they just make me itch. If they sold out I wouldn't bat an eye. That being said, the real culprit here is those choads at HORAL. Methode Gueuze was totally fine. Everyone understood what was going on there. You're just pricks. So now brewers have to wade through another swampy morass of nomenclature to appease the Belgians. Stupid.

One of the partners is really schmarmy.....well....he is a lawyer so he can't help it. But I love what they are doing and by all accounts they are good people. Problem is, the stuff most people get of theirs is average. You have to go to the source to get the good stuff and these days, when they release to good stuff you have to wait in the idiot line to get it. But that's now JKs fault.

That just tells me there is no need to do this.

TL;DR
De Garde vs JK isnt even close lol
The ONLY beer JK makes that can hold a candle to any De Garge is Atrial

Just a stupid statement. Atrial isn't even their best beer.... Maybe not even top 5.

mmmk
I've probably tried every JK beer they've ever made, just sayin
So make an argument that JK is even in the same realm as De Garde
Also, please tell me what 5 JK beers are better than Atrial...

Well then you have me beat there. They probably have 3 or 400 beers. I've had maybe 100. I guess you're the expert.
