Problem is, the stuff most people get of theirs is average.
I find this to be 100% correct. I've purchased about 10 different varietals of JK beers lately. And while they are good, none of them gave me the impression that JK is worth the hype. Some were flat out awful (the smoked one with chili powder and lemons), while the rest were just average, to my tastes. Noble King used to be my favorite beer a couple years ago, but as I had it a few months back, tasted like a standard saison. While good, I was missing the acidity and funk. Again, this is probably due to my shift in palate.
The one beer that I purchased that I thought, "ok now I understand some of the hype" was Boxers revenge. That was very good and was shocked it was 9%+ ABV.
Now as Zappa mentioned, I'm not getting any of their "great " beers like Atrial or Spon, so maybe that's why. But I do think JK, at least based on the beers I've had, seems a bit overrated.
Now I know I'll get shite for "liking a sellout" but for my tastes, I think Wicked Weed is my favorite sour brewery. "Cassette " , their house culture, just has a specific brett funk to acidity that I love. Maybe it has to do with actually going there last year and what a great vacation that was, but every sip takes me back.
I've yet to have a De Garde, Allagash, or Russian river sour, so my experiences with sours aren't as diverse as others. I am hoping to get some Fonta Flora soon, excited about that.
ETA: for reference these are the JK beers I've had:
Black Metal
Noble King
Commercial Suicide
Wytchmaker
El Cedro
Provenance (Lemon and Lime)
Das Wunderkind
Vernal Dichotomas (2016) - this was he bad one
Boxers revenge
Funk Metal

Now with regards to the OP, I tend to side with de Garde. JK seems to bend over way too much to appease the Belgians. I get, paying respect to the forefathers of the style. But they do it to a point where they are almost disrespecting their own beer, when they don't have to. America, IMO, is putting out better beer of any style than anywhere else. So while paying respect is noble, also take pride in making your beer the way you want to make it and calling it whatever you want.
I've listened to a podcast with Jean Van Roy of Cantillon and regards to HORAL. Even he doesn't agree with HORAL, and refuses to join them, but he also is a proponent of keeping Lambic and Geuze a product of Belgium only. However, he's stated that since the Belgian community dragged their feet for so long to establish guidelines and parameters, then it's really their fault the name Geuze and Lambic isn't proprietary.
He did also say he had an issue with Spon and Method Geuze, but there isn't anything to do about it.
JK just seems to worry to much about setting up their own proprietary naming system, while de Garde is refusing to get involved with the pettiness of it all.
