I am almost 42 years old. It honestly took me a long time to even try a dark beer. I didn't know much about them. I spoke the words, "I hate beer," for a long time because I though blonde/pale/ipa meant beer. I didn't know there were other options. At the age of 30ish, I had a Guinness. My eyes were open. THAT is beer! I have been a beer fan ever since that day, but I only enjoy the stouts, porters, and some dark ales. Coffee stouts, which I have only begun drinking in the past 3-4 years, are my absolute favorite beers.

Do y'all like a variety of styles or do you heavily favor one style over another. Or are you like me?

Thanks! Cheers!

You basically described me. I never liked dark beer until i had a founder's breakfast stout. I now prefer anything barrel aged, boozy, dark, over other options.

I hear you!

For me, it wasn't that I disliked dark beers. I simply had never had one. I didn't know it was an option. I thought all beer looked and tasted like Coors or Budweiser. I hate that stuff.

The Founder's breakfast stout is very good, btw!

Stouts, porters and dark ales are generally my first choice, but the craft beer explosion offers some great styles that I enjoy, too, IPA’s, DIPA’s, and more.

I mainly drink IPAs and stouts, but I like them all. I like Belgian/Belgian style beers too, but don't drink them as much as I used to. I don't care for the heavily fruited beers that much. I prefer ales over lagers.

I’ll drink an occasional Porter, but I prefer IPA’s/DIPA’s

I like many dark beers, though I generally prefer something a little lighter than the stouts and porters. My favorites:

New Belgium 1554 Black Lager

French Broad Brewery (Asheville, NC) 13 Rebels ESB

One World Brewery (Asheville, NC) Altbier

Rahr Brewery (Ft. Worth) Texas Red Amber

Bitter Sisters Brewery (Addison Tx) Hissy Fit German Marzen Lager

If I’m drinking beer, it’s dark. Porters, stouts, scotch ales all the way.
—Orkney Brewery’s Skull Splitter
—Belhaven’s Black Scottish stout
—St Peter cream stout

Most of the beers I drink have an IBU < 50. Red Hare’s Sticky Stout and Putin’s Paradise are solid beers I’ve had recently

I always start the night out as dark as I can get my hands on. Reasonably Corrupt, Sticky Slicker, Breakfast Stout, etc.. As the night drags on I typically get lighter and lighter until I’m finishing with Miller and the like. If I drink dark beer all night (like last night) I typically run out of room/gas before the night is truly over.

I can be a bit of a beer snob but I’ll drink pretty much any style.

I’ve definitely been on a porter/Stout thing for a while.

The first thing I’m looking for is a high ABV IPA, porter or Stout.

I’m a beer snob I guess.

I’m a dark beer person. Reve is my favorite. Korova by Gnarley Barley is really good too. If you like creamy porters, try Left Hand Milk Stout, Bells Kalamazoo Stout or Gotta Get Up to Get Down. Try an Old 504, it’s very good. Reasonably Corrupt is a good dark beer too.

You just named all the usual beers, along with Guinness, that are in my fridge or I order while out for dinner or a drink.

Great list, though!

Yeah, that’s standard local flavor. Some others that are really good:

Santa Fe Java Stout
Freetail Bourbon Barrel Local Coffee Stout (this stuff is great!)
Terrapin Irish Buh-Bye Wake-n-Bake
Left Hand Black Jack Porter
Bell’s Black Note Stout
8th Wonder Rocket Fuel (this one is right up there with Reve. It’s great!)
Great Divide Yeti & Great Divide Chocolate Aged Yeti
Mikkeller Kaffestout
Terrapin Moo-Hoo Chocolate Milk Stout
Breckinridge Brewery Vanilla Porter
