Are there any brewpubs serving food and beer in LA? I can't think of any, but I'm obviously not in LA, so what do I know?
Seems like I heard something to the effect that because a brewpub has to sell all of it's beer on premise. Is that discouraging brewpubs from opening up, because they can't expand to distributing beyond what they can sell on premise? What laws would need to change to encourage brewpubs?
If you have good food and a fun atmosphere, even a shitty brewery can do pretty well. If you have good food, good beer, and a good atmosphere, people will beat a path to your door. If you have great food and beer, it can get out of hand...

Yes, Crescent City Brewhouse and Old Rail.
Plus Courtyard is permitted as a Brewpub, but they don't serve food.

I don't know the answer to this, but obviously allowing small breweries and brewpubs to self-distribute a portion of their product would be a good thing.

That's where I was going with this. These places don't make enough beer to warrant a contract with a distributor, and they don't always know when they'll have too much beer on hand. If they have an extra keg or two, taprooms would be happy to help them out.
I see a lot of that happening with the smaller breweries, and I'm sure it makes it much easier for them to be successful and would be a lot less stressful for the brewers. Small brewpubs can't afford to be worrying about making too much beer and having to dump it, or constantly scaling down when they have too much inventory.
Just that one little change could do so much for micro-breweries in LA.

I always thought you could distribute, if you were a brewpub, if you brew off premises. So one could start off as a Courtyard type brewpub and once they get enough capital they could then open up a second location (like a warehouse) to act as a brewery for distribution.

While I guess this is in theory possible, anything brewed at the off-premise brewery would have to go through a distributor just to get back to the original brewpub. And distributors aren't supposed to be able to specifically allocate any beer for a certain establishment. So if Courtyard's theoretical off-premise brewery had a fresh batch of FTATC DIPA but Bulldog (or anyone else) wanted a bunch of it, Courtyard's original brewpub could get screwed out of their share of their own beer.
At least as far as I understand the current laws and interpretations.

Brewpubs just seem to be able to print money if they are even halfway decent. Even a place like BJ's with horrible beer seems to do well. If a brewpub makes good beer and good food, craft beer fans will have a place to take their family and everyone is happy...

Yup. I am very excited for Noble Wave Brewpub to hit Baton Rouge later this year/next year. Hopefully they serve up some juice!
