Bastardizing Lagniappe on Menus

OK, it time to stop this. I've seen this on the menu at Jolie Pearl Oyster Bar and again today at Boil & Roux. And if it's on these menus, I guarantee it's on a lot of other menus in Louisiana.
JPOB list their muffuletta (small $8, large $15) and chilled shrimp ($MKT) under the heading of Lagniappe.
Nope. That ain't lagniappe fellas. If I ordered a muffuletta, Lagniappe would be receiving jalapeno stuffed olives on the side or an oyster shot that I didn't ask for or expect, with compliments of the house.
Boil & Roux, well they ain't any better. Instead of saying "Side Items" they got cute and put Lagniappe. No. Sorry. Lagniappe doesn't equal side items. That's not what is means.
Lagniappe basically means a gift, a little something extra. And often unexpected by the receiver of the gift.
Webster defines it as a small gift given a customer by a merchant at the time of a purchase; broadly : something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure.
Anyone noticing this on other menus?

Jeez, you sure get worked up over petty shite. It's semantics, have another drink and save your anger for something more important.

I agree with you.
If I buy an ice chest of shrimp and the fisherman gives me a half dozen crabs..... thats lagniappe.

Very good point, Langland.
The menu is the printed philosophy of their business. They're located in LA, using LA verbage (well, French-LA), and they're using it incorrectly.
I think that reflects poorly on the entire business and only further propagates their ignorance of LA culture.
Eradicating this practice would be a very worthwhile mission for someone to accept.

I do agree with you. Words have meanings. If you use the word incorrectly you deserve to be made fun of, at the very least.

Well. If those selections and sides are free/come with an entree order then OK. Otherwise, it's stupid and something I would only expect to see at a "Cajun" restaurant in the Midwest.

I've always said the same thing about gift shops. If this shop is full of gifts, why do I have to pay for them? Shouldn't they just give them to me?

Every time I see that word in a commercial setting it kills me on the inside. If it's "a little something extra" why am I paying for it?
It's one of the most abused Louisiana terms out there. Needs to be taken back.

I'v heard Jo Lee Pearl (or however you spell it) sucks. Never been but to mean it seems like a poor business plan to be shipping in oysters all over the country when you are based in Louisiana. Anyone the complaints have ranged from poor service, to terrible drinks from the bar, to overpriced menu items.

I've also been to Jolie Pearl, thought it was fine.
Oysters from waters outside of Louisiana are pretty good, too. You should try some.

Jolie Pearl has some quality oysters no doubt about it. but their prices are walking the fine line between a little high and absurd imo.

They have plenty of local oysters, Nice to be able to try a few other varieties as well.

So they could list the sides under Lagniappe and the "little something extra" is they charge you for it without telling you.

And what's the deal with Grape-Nuts? I open the box. No grapes. No nuts.

The jar is round, the cup is round, they should call it round-tine
