Headed there next weekend with another couple. Looking for a couple of places to hit up in the evening. Any suggestions. FYI...wife does not like foo foo food (small plates etc). HA!
Was thinking maybe Lonesome Dove if it is any good and possibly Vespaio for italian Saturday, although they don't take reservations. We have brunch reservations for Sunday morning at Suerte.
Thanks for any info.

Evangeline Cafe is pretty good. They should some live music as well. Owner is from Lake Charles

El naranjo
Just ate there Friday on our trip to Austin. Really good and not your typical Mexican menu.
Also Browns Bbq. Best brisket I ever had

You're probably not going to get a whole lot of replies only because this question seens to be asked almost once a week.
Vespaio is very good. The lasagna is one of the best and easily big enough for 2 to split.
Lonesome dove had some good stuff when I went but I was very disappointed in my steak. It was cooked perfectly but was almost completely unseasoned. They had some kosher salt on the table for me to add which is useless once a steak is seared. The elk sliders were great though.
Ramen Tatsuya is really good if you're into that.
Terry Black's for BBQ
Luke's Inside Out next to Gibson Street Bar has a really good medium rare burger.
Easy Tiger is a bakery and bar that serves some good sausage/meat plates and sandwiches. The Pastrami is awesome there.
Homeslice, Via 313, or Little Deli for Pizza
Red's Porch only for chicken fried chicken covered in bacon gravy.
Torchy's or Taco Deli for lunch tacos.
El Alma has some good Mexican food and drinks.
I've heard good things about Fixe, Red Ash, and Suerte but haven't personally been to any yet.
St. Elmo and Lazarus are 2 good breweries. Lazarus is on the east side near a bunch of bars, a few restaurants, and another brewery, Zilker. Whistler's is a cool cocktail bar over there.
There are a lot of other places that are good but the "froufrou small plates" has become pretty common around here.

Was damn good. I do a decent amount of smoking and it isn’t my wife’s favorite thing... but she really enjoyed Valentina’s. If you get a taco there, it isn’t a normal street taco. It’s loaded down with meat.
I know you said no small plates (foo foo food)... but the atmosphere and food at odd duck was great. We sat at the bar, ordered like 5-6 plates (aren’t typical small plates) and had awesome cocktails. Nothing foo foo about it.

I feel like we should sticky the following threads:
Nashville restaurants
Charleston restaurants
Austin restaurants
Because these threads seem to come up every other week.

Went to check out this place over Labor Day weekend. Thanks to this very board, I enjoyed quite an awesome meal in an awesome town. The patio was fun and vibrant with misters to make the humidity tolerable. The wait stuff was textbook Austin...lots of tattoos, funky outfits, odd shoes and the laid back personalities to match. Everything about this place is great. I would highly recommend giving it a shot and can say that I will be back next time I'm in Austin.
They have their usual menu and a daily one to choose from...we got some from both. Pics below.
We had the Tartare and the Escargot for appetizers. Food was great!
For entrees, I got the venison and the Mrs. (no pics) got the duck confit. Both were VERY delicious and cooked just right. Full of flavor. ....and yes,the duck was gone before I knew it, so no pic.
The "backyard" of this place has some bizarre things, as expected. A neon pagoda lights up the entire area and from would I saw was a sitting/smoking area for the patrons. Then there was this wildlife room with some funky shite in it. These 2 kiddos were in there most of the night, so I just snapped a pic with them in it. There is also one of those "old time photos" truck there (like many theme parks have), but we didn't wait in line to get one taken.
