Paging TigerMyth36....
Check out the Puttaforkdown thread pinned at the top. Plenty of people in there that have lost a lot of weight doing atkins/low carb.

absolutely incorrect.
people don't understand their body say this.
while its true you weigh 3-5lbs less in 'ketosis' due to your body not retaining a bunch of water from starchy food, that is the most ignorant statement I have ever heard.
it takes 3500 calories to add a pound of weight and there's nothing magical or sinister about using atkins to lose weight.
i have used it extremely successfully and transitioned over numerous times to normal eating for awhile (always returning back to atkins because i feel so damn good when i eat that way) and have had no problem weightwise.
and yep, myth went from 350 or so pounds to 160 on it...i'm sure thats all water loss and he'll gain 'a shite ton of weight' if he gets off it.

This is true. In order to lose weight, you must expend more energy than you take in, regardless of the particular diet and/or exercise regimen you choose.
A study published a few years ago examined the effectiveness of diets with different compositions of carbs, fat, and protein. All of the diets utilized the same caloric deficit (750 kcal/day). The results showed that the diets were equally successful in producing weight loss, as well as reducing other risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Reducing your caloric intake is the main aspect of dieting that is responsible for weight loss, and this can be achieved with all sorts of diets out there. It's more important to choose one that doesn't make you miserable and that you can adhere to long-term.
