I do and I’m fairly certain my siblings do also because it’s something our dad has always done to his. I don’t recall seeing other recipes include it. Anyone here do this? Just curious.

You sure you aren't confusing the leaf inside gumbo with bay leaves? Bay leaf is common, never heard of basil and may overpower your gumbo.

Once you add the basil, you're just a couple of ingredients from inventing gumpho.

I did once just to do something different, I had seen John Folse do it and thought what the hell why not. It wasn't bad at all, it just changed the way gumbo tasted significantly. Haven't done it since though.

ETA: John Folse Website with the recipe with Basil

I've used a dashi broth for gumbo as an experiment and it turned out good. I wouldn't do that if cooking it for Christmas eve but its a good experiment. I may do it again and add basil....maybe some coconut milk......

As far as herbs go, I normally add bay leaf, thyme, and a little rubbed sage if I'm feeling it. I find a lot of people I know rarely utilize fresh or dried herbs in their gumbo. The basil thing seems a bit too drastic.

Jalapeno doesn't seem that absurd to me. I'm pretty sure I've used a Donald Link fried chicken and sausage gumbo recipe that called for a jalapeno

Interesting to see everyone shitting on this. I cook a lot and I’ve always received amazing feedback on my gumbo. People don’t even ask what’s in it so I know it’s not something that’s throwing an off flavor. Aside from my vegetables, the only things I season with are S&P, Tony’s sparingly, garlic powder, a few bay leaves and the sweet basil. I’d highly suggest trying it.
