An $18 Supermarket Whisky Was Just Named World's Best Scotch

Just a little under a year since Aldi's Highland Black Scotch Whisky and Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky took home gold medals at the 2018 Spirits Business Scotch Whisky Masters, Lidl, their German discount supermarket competitor, has won big at World Whiskies Awards.
Judged by a panel of 40 industry experts, Lidl's Queen Margot, an eight-year blended Scotch whisky, took home the title of "Best Scotch Whisky," according to the Evening Standard. The whisky beat out some serious competition from industry giants (and far pricier bottles) including Johnnie Walker Black Label. Queen Margot retails for £13.49, or approximately $17.98 USD, proving that good Scotch doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg.

No it wasnt
But that doesnt mean its not good:

However, this is fake whisky news, plain and simple. The real story is not so straightforward. While this Queen Margot whisky did indeed win at the World Whisky Awards, its medal is a far cry from an outright declaration of ‘best Scotch in the world’.
To be specific, the Queen Margot 8 Year Old bagged a very particular award; the ’12 year old and under’ category for Scotch whisky under the ‘Blended’ section.
What’s more, the media stories that misreported this are wrong on another count. The World Whisky Awards hasn’t even declared its ‘best’ whisky yet, only the round one category winners. The winners for best overall blended whisky (part of round 2) and best overall whisky (round 3) won’t be declared until March 28th.
But that doesnt mean its not good:

All this is a shame because the hullabaloo masks the real story; that the Queen Margot whisky, in winning this category, actually managed to beat other bottles worth double the price, including Johnnie Walker Black Label and Islay Mist.
However, here’s the one fact that a few of these these incorrect whisky news stories get right. This is probably a bottle worth buying, as it is likely to be worth the price. After all, it’s not like it’s going to cost you much to find out whether it is a worthy winner of its specific category.

Still impressive to be the best 12 year and under scotch. I might have to find out where I can pick up a bottle.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it does in the next round.

My Uber driver in Scotland last year told me that the Aldi scotch was very good especially for the price. Unfortunately grocery stores can’t sell liquor in my state so I don’t have an easy opportunity to pick any up.
