Can anyone give me the scoop on air fryers?

Is this one of those gimmicks you use once and never again? Or can I make some tasty items with it.

I would be using it mostly for vegetables, but I’m curious how sweet potatoes and chicken would turn out.

Any brand suggestions or recipes would be appreciated

I've heard they're good for chicken wings. That's about all I know

Basically set it, and forget it. Use mine 3-4 times per week. Hamburgers, pork chops, chicken breasts, wings, fries, etc.. re-heating pizza slices is the real deal . We have a Ninja that was purchased from Target. Hundreds of recipes online as I usually just improv based on internal food temp or taste test

Got an Air Fryer XL for Christmas. I use it 4-5 times a week. Works great for wings or grilled sandwiches.

Set time and temp and away you go. Wasn't too crazy about the burgers

We went to bed bath and beyond and got us a fancy replacement toaster oven. this thing is made by Cuisinart and is kinda the Swiss army knife of ovens. It's a warmer, broiler, air broiler, toaster, oven, convection oven, and yes an air frier. Great package reasonable and we love it so far. Only tried the air frier a couple times so far but it is quick and works pretty good we breaded and fried some chicken thighs and the chicken came out very good very juicy and perfectly cooked the breading was crunchy but well not greasy ...... ok though

Daily user here. I own both the Power XL and Cuisinart. Our Cuisinart recently broke and we had quite a few issues with the timer and knobs. That said, it worked great when it was. Power XL is still going strong.

My advice is to get yourself a big one because eventually you will want one unless you're by yourself. My sister has the Breville and has had zero issues. It's pricey though. As a kitchen gadget hoarder, this is something I definitely recommend as well as the Instant Pot.

I thought it was a gimmick

But we have used the hell out of it since we got it.

It has basically replaced or oven for 70% of the stuff we make. I use it for reheating leftovers more than the microwave.

It's nothing more than a convection oven. If you have one of those, then there's no need to buy an air fryer.

It's just a convection oven in a different shape.

I have a convection oven and an air fryer, and my wings done in the convection oven never come out as good as the air fryer. Better-than-restaurant wings at home justifies having an air fryer in my household.

Just because one is a “better” convection oven than the other, doesn’t make it a different thing altogether. Air fryer is just convection cooking in a different shape.

It’s a convection over with a much stronger fan that basically preheats in 2 minutes.

Its got its place in the kitchen, especially if you have kids

I don't think anyone in here claimed an air fryer was not a convection oven. Calm down beantown.

I’ve made chicken wings, taquitos, flautas, fried chicken (breading was pork rinds & almond flour), and fried pickles (same mixture). All have been great. I got the all in one instant pot. does everything - it’s pretty awesome!

Can you even fit more than one slice at a time in there?

I have an air fryer - and to be honest I rarely use it. I have a toaster oven, which I reheat 90% of my leftovers in. I'll try a couple slices of leftover pizza in the toaster oven and air fryer tonight for comparison.

UPDATE: So I came home and decided to test my air fryer versus my toaster oven by reheating pizza, even though no one asked. The air fryer basket was bigger than I remember, the toaster oven is BARELY bigger. I was able to fit two slices in both appliances - tighter fit in the air fryer due to the rounded edges. Did roughly the same temp and time and IMO the air fryer ones did indeed come out better. A little more crispy and a little more grease bubbling on top.

However, I do not like being able to check on the food while it cooks. And when doing a second cook with the air fryer on the same settings, the second batch of pizza slices were burnt from the residual heat of the cook ~5 minutes prior. So I'd probably still stick with the toaster oven.
