t's been forever since i've been to lafonda's, and you're obviously familiar with the situation...did the family that took it over not care about the place, or were they just ignorant about running a restaurant?

Dude's been airing the family's dirty laundry on here for years.

I'm just sad, I'll never get to eat another one of their old tacos or chalupas. It's been more than 10 years since I've been, though.

none of them grew up in the business like the rest of the family. they were from up north. their mother passed away and they inherited her share. they didn't have a controlling interest but enough to make things difficult for my aunts.

Large beef Nacho, large Margarita with salt on the rocks. Enjoy in the lounge.

I got to go get it one last time.
Sad to see.

I guess that free roll of toilet paper with every meal really did them in.

It's a love it or hate it kinda place...I loved it and went for many years after every LSU ball game and on Friday nights....

2 crispy tacos, chile con queso, and refried beans with cheese and onions...every time...

That bean dip is awesome!

I actually considered driving down from Monroe for one more order of flat cheese enchiladas. Then, I realized I had a trip to NYC planned for this weekend and got really sad.

Wow ,back in the 80's I worked within walking distance . Friday afternoon margaritas had me laying face down in the overgrown median on Airline mare than once. Great folks though, was very good in its day.

Whew! Got worried that this was the Lafayette location...it's gone downhill a little the last few months, but didn't think it would close THAT quickly...

So....you'll have no problem spilling the bean dip recipe then, right?

FWIW, the whole family went Saturday night to say our goodbyes. Place was a mad house.

They called Louise and Annette's asses at home and told them to GTFOver there ASAP.

Did you grow up or spend any time in north Baton Rouge?

Pretty sure it was a required event if you grew up on that side of the tracks.

You couldn't even handle the tacos or bean dip then....

One must have conditioned their body for decades to withstand the effects of certain menu items

Sorry to hear. I'll go ahead and say it, I went there once and the tamales were definitely straight out of the can. Everything else was less than stellar also so I never went back. This was in the 1970's too.

Also sorry to mention it here but my go to Tex-Mex place is El Rio Grande right down the road. I've been going there since 1969 and the food is every bit as good now as it was then. Same great people, same great dishes.

When I was at LSU in the mid to late '70's a kid named Sammy used to hang with our group at a lot of the LSU Football games. I just can't quite remember his last name after all these years but I understood him to be the son of the owner of LaFonda's. I recall him to be a good guy.

And that's my LaFonda's story.
