Thanks for the update. I do have one question, though. Do you consider Community and Folger's to be comparable? I do NOT, but I see you listed them together.

No, Community is way better than Folgers in my opinion. I won't even drink Folgers.

Thanks! That clears it up. I will probably try some 8 O'clock soon.

I have also done a Google search to see what reviews it has received. It appears there are many people out there that think it taste better than most if not all other store brands...interesting. It takes up such a small shelf section at Albertson's...I guess I have simply overlooked it all these years.

That's what I thought too! I saw it at the very bottom of the shelf and decided to try it.

I grew up on 8 O'clock coffee from A&P. My mom would let me grind the coffee beans in the store. Haven't tried it in a number of years, but still have fond memories of the aroma.

My grandfather was a big fan of 8 O'Clock coffee. This post brings back some good memories.

8 O'Clock was A&P's house brand of coffee. The stores used to have a big industrial-style grinder that let you select about a dozen different grinds. I used to love the smell of fresh ground coffee in the store.

When Community goes on sale, we stock up. I'm pretty sure the sale price is better than that 5.99 and it's good, good.

A bag of whole bean is usually 5.99

The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company.

I miss the A&P and K&B I grew up with. Where Goodwood Hardware is now.

The bag claims the company has been in the coffee business since the late 1800s. The artwork was alluring.

It's been around forever. Basically, it was A&P's house brand

quote:

A&P was established as "Gilman & Company" in 1859, and began selling bags of whole bean coffee on their own. Their coffee, however, was not given a true official name at that time, being sometimes called "Eight O'Clock Breakfast Coffee" at the start.

In 1919, in contrast with the introduction of two other coffee lines, Bokar and Red Circle, the coffee was finally given its official name;[1] A&P supposedly conducted a survey asking people what time of day they drank coffee most. The majority of those surveyed reported that they typically drank coffee at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. A&P then went ahead and took out the word "Breakfast" from the name, rebranding its signature coffee as simply "Eight O'Clock". [1]

It's nothing special. But not bad either.

I remember the grind your own machine at the A&P.
They bought The National and went out of business not too long after that.

I buy it occasionally - the Columbian Peaks whole bean. I grind my own and prepare it in an AeroPress. It is my favorite grocery store coffee.
