Gonna fly home tomorrow (Wednesday). Has been a whirlwind of beer and wine, all Aussie made ( No Foster’s or Yellow Tail ).

The best beer by far was Feral Hop Hog. An American (!) Pale Ale made in Western Australia. Really nice balance between the hops and floral/citrus notes. Almost a sour.

After that was Little Creatures, a really nice IPA, followed by Fat Yak, and Carlton Dry. Carlton is more of a pound all day session beer, but doesn’t make you piss every 20 minutes.

And then there was my reliable Cooper’s, which is actually the only real Aussie beer you can get in Baton Rouge (World Market).

Nicely done.

Please tell me you didn't ask anyone where you could watch "The Game"

I actually went to “The Game”.

Except it was Cricket. And they called it The Ashes—Australia v. England.

What are the Aussie equivalents of Bud and Miller that would get the most shelf room at the grocery store? Is it them, or are there local favorites that the masses drink.

The big beers in Australia are Carlton Draught, XXXXGold, Toohey’s New, and Victoria Bitter.

I’ve been to Australia twice now and have yet to see a single can of Foster’s.

A carton (24-pack) of beers in Australia is generally $50 Aus. A higher quality, like Little Creatures, will be upwards of $60-75 Aus.

They were high when I was there last year. Although I did find some damn good brews at a brewery called Modus Operandi and some others from a brewery called 3 ravens.

Was at Disneyland during Australia's spring break years ago and met a grocery store manager. He said they drink a lot of Coors and Bud light. Definitely no Fosters.

This reminded me that I once read a book by Tony Horwitz (great writer) about traveling in Australia, and much of it was about drinking shitloads of beer.

I looked it up. It's "One for the Road". Here is part of the description from Publisher's Weekly:

quote:

Having spent months in Sydney without seeing the "real" Australia, American journalist Horwitz sets out to hitchhike solo through the continent's rugged interior.

He discovers this to be infernally hot, flat and fly-ridden, with the only above-ground liquid to be found in the "hotels" (pubs) that dot the lone highway at irregular intervals. Aptly titled, One for the Road is as much a chronicle of the pubs along the way as of the scenery. In the Northern Territory, besides being the national beverage, beer is also a unit of measure and standard of currency. It is "about a six-pack"or one beer every eight minutesto the next roadhouse; fixing a car's tail pipe costs "a carton."
