No you aren't. You won't be anywhere near it, fact.
AS far as the time of opening, once all the road closures are in place, if I had to guess, I'm thinking between 3:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. It will be on the evening news.

Oh the irony of your statements. I have seen a few post from people in the floodplain that are complaining about being "sacrificed" for New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Truth of the matter is that the only reason they are even able to build and farm the area is because of Morganza and ORCS, not in spite of it. If the Corps decided to take all away all of the flood control structures, Morgan City and the entire floodplain would be wiped out by the Mississippi as it changed course to the Atchafalaya.
I certainly sympathize with the people who will be affected by the flooding. However, their angst is directed at the Corps in most cases, but it is because of the Corps that they have dry land to live on right now.
amen

So basically they are flooding the Morgan City area so other "more important" places aren't affected?
Is that the correct line of thinking?

yes, but morgan city would be under water by now if the morganza locks weren't there anyway

No. We will be closing this section of LA 1 while they begin opening the gates for this very reason. Passing motorists will create too large a saftey concern wanting to slow down or stop and watch. To access the site, you will need a special pass which only members of agencies (LADOTD, Army Corps, LANG, etc.), Executive Government officials, and News Media will have. This will have to be shown to law enforcement to be able to view the opening. Very very few will see this tomorrow (Saturday)...the opening of yhe needed gates is VERY SLOW (15-20 min per gate) will take around 5 days to open them. I am unsure how long that section of LA 1 will be closed during that process. It may be the entire time and beyond though.
It's always for our own safety, isn't it?
When gov't types tell us we can't do something.

Not sure exactly what the hidden meaning in the question is, but in this particular case, YES. It is for safety reasons and so the contractor has all the room they need to open the gates. At the very minimum, a lane closure was absolutely needed for the work area. Having only one lane open with all the sight-seeing and traffic control would have been a nightmare. It was the right decision.

I'm staying in Natchez, MS while working in Tensas parish, LA this week. Tried to drive down to Morganza early this morning but the road was closed 10 miles away from Vidalia due to levee enhancements. Crud.
I understand them wanting to keep crowds away while they're working and whatnot, but surely they don't expect to keep everyone away for this once in a lifetime event.
I'll have to take a different route and try again next weekend.

Some people's lives are about to be turned upside down and you want to watch? You are a sick man. It's probably too late, but get help just the same.
And we are to believe you didn't watch the video of the tsunami right? SInce you knew people were being swept away?
Or you didn't watch the live feeds from the Weather Channel guys who were covering Katrina as it blew thru?
Just stop posting unless you can be honest.

I'm planning on being at the openning of the gates today. Good thing is that I have a cop pass.

Unsure who will be opening the gates.
Those with passes will be in for a long day.

The State Police are closing parts of Highway One around Morganza and rerouting traffic.

New Orleans would be a memory as well, without Corps flood control. The fact of the matter is these people are complaining a lot less than some others would be complaining if they were in the same situation IMHO.

It is my understanding that after the flood in the 70's that the U.S. Government settled flooding claims with the people in the Morganza area with the understanding that they were being compensated and could not file future claims.

Despite that, and despite the fact that they are EXPRESSLY immune under the Flood Control Act of 28, the Corps still rolls over on these claims. That may change after this.
