I'm sure it's been posted already, but just stumbled upon this quote while doing some reading up...
Needless to say, I got chills.
quote:Mark Twain, Life on the Mississippi
One who knows the Mississippi will promptly aver...that ten thousand River Commissions, with the mines of the world at their back, cannot tame the lawless stream, cannot curb it or confine it, cannot say to it Go here or Go there, and make it obey; cannot save a shore that it has sentenced.
Needless to say, I got chills.

From Advocate early Friday morning:
From Advocate
quote:
A request to use the Morganza Spillway north of Baton Rouge to divert some of the water from the rapidly rising Mississippi River could be made as early as Friday, said Col. Ed Fleming, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ New Orleans District.

I found this on the NOAA web site. This shows river stages with Morganza open. I saw some questions earlier asking this information. The final number is the stage with Morganza open.
IT SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED THAT WHILE THE OFFICIAL FLOOD STAGES ARE
LISTED BELOW...MOST POPULATION CENTERS ARE PROTECTED BY FLOOD
CONTROL LEVEES TO MUCH HIGHER LEVELS.
FORECAST POINT FLOOD FORECAST WITH CONTINGENCY WITH
STAGE MORGANZA CLOSED MORGANZA OPEN
RED RIVER LANDING 48.0 65.5 63.5-64.5
BATON ROUGE 35.0 47.5 45.5-46.5
DONALDSONVILLE 27.0 36.0 35.0
RESERVE 25.0 28.0 25.0
NEW ORLEANS 17.0 19.5 17.0
MORGAN CITY 4.0 9.5 12.0-13.0

On Tinypic, make sure to select the link that has the .gif or .png at the end. Or .jpeg. Or .fillinblankhere. Should work...it's worked for me.

One who knows the Mississippi will promptly aver—not aloud but to himself—that ten thousand River Commissions, with the mines of the world at their back, cannot tame that lawless stream, cannot curb it or confine it, cannot say to it, "Go here," or "Go there," and make it obey; cannot save a shore which it has sentenced; cannot bar its path with an obstruction which it will not tear down, dance over, and laugh at. But a discreet man will not put these things into spoken words; for the West Point engineers have not their superiors anywhere; they know all that can be known of their abstruse science; and so, since they conceive that they can fetter and handcuff that river and boss him, it is but wisdom for the unscientific man to keep still, lie low, and wait till they do it.

19.5 in NO
I would expect BC to be higher than that.

19.5 ft at Bonnet Carre does not equate to 19.5 ft at New Orleans. River levels decrease further downstream you go.
Extremely easy to read river stage data at the USACE site below; gives record heights at each gage, flood stage latest reading with time taken, 24 hour change in elevation, 24 hour rainfall totals at gage. Looks like they're updated HOURLY. Click on the current elevation for a graph which will show you the 7 day history at that gage. Click on the asterisk to see what the models are predicting a little ways out.
Choose NEW ORLEANS DISTRICT, then MISSISSIPI RIVER AND PASSES for all gages Knox Landing and down.

You can change the DISTRICT at the top of the page for those of you interested in what's going on north of Knox Landing.

Looks like Kip has declared Baton Rouge in a state of emergency.
LINK
the Baton Rouge Mayor's Office:
With Baton Rouge facing one of the highest Mississippi River elevations in the past century, Mayor-President Melvin "Kip" Holden filed a formal declaration of emergency Thursday aimed at expediting federal aid in the event of a disaster.
Mayor Holden actually signed the document Tuesday, and it was filed with the East Baton Rouge Clerk of Court's Office Thursday afternoon.

Good. I'd much prefer him be proactive with this.
