there is still some concern that the river could hit 49 or 50' in BR with anymore rain in the midwest ... here's hoping and praying the 47.5' projection holds up ..

Doesn't it seem just a tad odd that the predicted levels for both BR and NOLA come within a half foot of the height of the levee?
Not sayin, just sayin...

funny you say that .. that catches me as interesting too .. so you are going to project one of the most powerful rivers in north america to come within 6 inches of the top of the levee system at their highest points in BR and NOLA and there is no real major panic yet ? i am just not comfortable with this margin for error myself ..

I crossed it this afternoon. Water is coming into the forebay but it is still a good ways away from the structure. They appeared to be doing work to the guide levees on the Morganza side and 2 gates were up. They still had a herd of cattle on the floodway side.
Thats what I thought, this talk of them opening it this week is bullshite. It would not surprise me if they dont open it at all. But still a good chance they do.
I imgine flooding the forebay reduces river level a slight bit as well, thats something like 3,000 acres I think they will flood to a depth of like 15' if my memory is correct.
Thanks for the info.

Here is a link to a Natchez Radio Station with good coverage for a flood for anyone around Natchez, Concordia & Catahoula Parishes.
Includes several playbacks of interviews you can listen too and now has pictures of flooding in the area.

Does anyone know what the impact of opening Morganza will have on Lake Verret?
In laws live there and they are in Colorado.

I have to go to a meeting with the COE in Vidalia this morning because we're going to to have to inspect the levees 24 hours a day starting today.

Not saying they wont open it cause they probably will. It will take a few days for the water to fill up the forebay. I think the back levee is like 10' high so if the water is coming over it, it is already all there. It just will take a little time to fill up the forebay. It wont be instant. I know in 97 and 08 the water was up to the the top of the gates. There was alot of activity there that I have never seen before though.

Isn't lake Verret on the east side of the levee for the spillway?

Just heard on Weather Channel that flooding is starting to reach some parts of Beale St. in Memphis, and to think all of that water has to come south.

It is.
Looking at the floodway, it seems that Flat Lake, Morgan City, and Lake Palourde have more to worry about than Lake Verret. But I don't know - I'm just looking at a map.

But you have to think that the ruver widens too, and the gradient lesssens, and the channel is deeper. So there is more volume for the discharge that is coming.

The curious gather Thursday morning under the trolley bridge at Beale and Riverside in Downtown Memphis for a glimpse of the swollen Mississippi River. Floodwaters were beginning to push into Tom Lee Park toward Riverside after flooding General DeWitt Spain Airport north of Downtown.
The rising Mississippi River covers swaths of land around the Hernando DeSoto Bridge on Thursday as preparations pick up for a possible record river level next week.
from Harrah's in Tunica Mississippi
The Commercial Appeal shows flooding along I-55 in Arkansas.

Here are some of the pictures I took of the BR levee on April 17, 2008. Pretty much the same as Pectus pictures. In '08, it was the highest the river at BR had been in 15 years.

Does anyone know where I can find the height of the levee on the Port Allen side?
Download Google Earth. Click on terrain. Move mouse over levee. It looks like most of the levee is anywhere from 47-50.
Posted on 5/6/11 at 8:59 am to nrtiger
Port Allen is the poorer side and usually those levees are a bit lower, so that if over topping does happen it is on the poorer side.
