For anyone interested in the accuracy of levee heights, here's some information for the levees south of Baton Rouge:
Roy Dokka heads the Center for Geoinformatics at LSU. Sat in on my thesis dissertation. Used some of their surveying equipment to check the accuracy of LIDAR elevation data in Ascension Parish.
Subsidence in South Louisiana
Why Accurate Elevations Are Essential
Two presentations contain a lot of same information.

Nothing south of Port Hudson will not be flooded, no matter what the cost. All the plans and resources are aimed toward this goal. Ask anybody who knows and they will tell you that anything will be sacrificed to keep this area dry.

Yes and it it very worrisome. My business is about 1.5 miles from the levee at Colonial Country Club that almost gave way in 1973. I am closely monitoring the situation. This thread is actually the best reference I can find.

Well, good luck, man. If it winds up getting sketchy - let me know if you need any help moving stuff out. Seriously.

I would think that the river gauges have also subsided, so that would negate any effect "lowered" levees would have.

Thanks for the offer. We should be okay. Trusting in the COE is a serious problem I have. I have a couple of 18 wheelers and a few more from branches that can haul shite out. Again, thanks man.

Please stop IM'ing guys. It clutters up the thread and will get the sticky removed.
Sticky or no sticky, I think this thread stands a good chance of ending up dethroning the Gustav thread as the longest thread in TD history.
And it will keep that title forever.

Damn, that came out of nowhere. I think it's really odd that NO jumped so much and BR stayed the same.

Agreed. We still have two weeks of this thing.

Not saying we will reach that point...but you do realize it is entirely possible for them to do whatever they can...and it still won't be enough.
And I disagree. The act of doing everything they can to protect BR/NO, puts other towns/settlements in danger.
I would think it is fairly likely Morgan City will get at least some flooding from the opening of Morganza.

Of course, 10k+ is a lot of posts
We had weeks building up for Gustav too as it took forever to get here, then like the solid month of recovery.

The playing surface inside Tiger Stadium is 25 feet above sea level. The river is expected to be at 47.5 feet above sea level on the 23rd of May. The highest point on the LSU campus, at ground level, is the Western side of Middleton library, and it is only at 40 feet above sea level.
Better hope the levees hold.

They play with the numbers I think.
BR they just put up worst case crest, with no correction from spillways.
Some places were just locking the NO crests at 17 feet because they would assume that emergency management would do anything and everything to make sure it doesn't go over that.

You can't extrapolate height like that.
If the levees on the eastern bank of BR fail in a way that can hit LSU, it takes out mostly athletic buildings. Not the campus proper.
That big hill near the journalism building is where it would stop.
