They didn't stop traffic in 2008. They will stop them from shoving on the bank while waiting for the locks, but I doubt that they shite the river down.

I see. How much would the Morganza and the Old River spillways drop the water levels for Baton Rouge and New Orleans. I'm like New Orleans and am fond of Baton Rouge too and I'm tired of having my nerves frayed from Katrina and holding my breathe during Gustav and the oil spill which fricked us up here in coastal Alabama along with coastal Louisiana. An assault from the Mississippi River is not good for my nerves either. I'm out of state (Alabama) but the Southern U.S. needs a break from disasters for a while.

49.5 would be really really bad.

Wouldn't it be worse than that?

Anyone know how accurate these projections normally are?

It seems to me that they are normally accurate - and that makes me the most nervous.

I'm not saying any of that stuff is going to happen. This isn't Chicken Little. But I think people should be aware of just how serious and dangerous this situation is. And very aware of their surroundings (Waterford).

There isn't going to be any margin for error with this. That goes for the decision making and any mishap.

I have never heard of this being done. I think it depends on the river height obviously, but barring levels we have never seen before it wont happen. If it doesn't get above 17 at Carrollton, they won't shut it down. Book it.

Doesn't the Saline/Larto complex depend on the river backing up and why there are so many white perch there?

Seems like old man Woodson told me that once.

Isn't the Morganza Spillway both North and South of Krotz Springs? What does the Northern Spillway do? Why would Morgan City be affected and not Krotz Springs?

Krotz Springs lies to the west of the river in the West Atchafalya Floodway not in the Morganza Spillway or the Atchafalaya Basin like Morgan City does.

Opening the spillways doesn't make any less water come down the Mississippi later; so, there's no reason to open them any earlier than they're needed. Would rather as much water move into the Gulf with its unlimited storage capacity and zero adverse effects than start flooding other areas prematurely.

Even if they shut down the River from new traffic, you would still have all those barges tied up. With the speed of the River, if one of those breaks loose and strikes the top of the levee, it would probably lead to a breech in an area that they have no control over.

That was my point and concern. With the River moving as fast as it is, something so simple could be catastrophic. And anyone along the River needs to be aware of how dangerous this situation is.

Even in Houma today, people were thinking 'well nothing is going to happen to me'. I just think that is naive.
