Here are some of the latest updates concerning roads being closed and businesses. This info is coming from the NatchezDemocrat.com
Infrastructure:
• Eight miles of both lanes of Louisiana 15, two miles south of Louisiana 131 will be closed starting at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 5, to all vehicular traffic.
Levee crews will be working to place sand bags in low sections.
The road will be closed for approximately two weeks.
The alternate route for traffic will be U.S. 84 to Louisiana 129 to Louisiana 565.
Businesses and restaurants:
• Magnolia Grill will be closed Thursday, May 5, due to construction of the temporary levee. The restaurant Under-the-Hill will reopen at 11 a.m. Friday for normal business hours. The restaurant will also be open seven days a week until forced to close by high water or unsafe conditions.
Check back throughout the day for updates as they are available.
Schools:
• The Concordia Parish School District has revised its school calendar. School will now dismiss on May 18, instead of May 20. The district is sending out letters to parents Thursday.
School will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. May 18, and that day will be the teachers’ last day. The district also has an emergency plan in place if needed prior to May 18.

Holden sparring with Mike Walker?
Apparently Kip Holden isn't very happy that Mike Walker made some tweets about the Baton Rouge levees. Does anyone really trust homeland security to get anything right though? Kip seems to think they are the final authority on the matter.

What's the website everyone goes to see the projections and what it's current level is?

If you really think the articles you linked are saying the same things that are happening today then no explanation that I could muster will clear your thinking. I only wish the best for you and yours if you are in an area that is being effected. Specific protocals have happened that have not been exercised in years due to the river levels. NOLA may not see any flooding but other areas in Louisiana already have water on them that did not see water last year.

These are articles all from last year....why is this year any different that last year?
Wow thank god you posted this. I can't wait to tell 6 captain friends with close to 180 years of combined experience on the Upper and Lower Mississppi that what they are witnessing is not that big a deal.

Tgrbait I hope you have no family in Catahoula,Concordia,Tensas,Madison parishes alot of these areas are already flooded. Catahoula and Concordia in particular are under the gun. Even without a levee break the low lying areas of these parishes will flood. In fact some have already done so. I was a kid during the flood of 73 I still have nightmares about water. the crest here is supposed to be several feet higher than 73. Yes this is cause for alarm.

Very few people understand the possible severity of what's going on

Are we still concerned about the ORCS failing and rerouting the MS river? Or did we deem that the ORCS is safe other than a catastrophic event?

Idk what the OT decision on this was, but I'm still concerned that the ORCS will shite out.

This almost happened during the flood of 73 but if I am not mistaken they have added structure since then to keep this from happening

The Miss. River is supposed to be diverted 70% toward BR/NOLA & 30% to the Atch. So if they know what the flow is above RRL, you could roughly project it. But that can change, as the pins at ORCS can adjust that number higher or lower depending on what they want to do (if I recall correctly, they changed it to 65-35 during 1973- at MC's expense). It's much easier to figure out river height and extrapolate a flow than it is to actually figure out the cross-sectional area and multiply it by the velocity- which would actually give you a real flow.
I'm no longer in the area, so I don't know if they are doing this, but my guess would be the newspaper sees either a river gauge or a river projection and extrapolates a number. If you want to figure out what the river was designed to do about 80 years ago, look up "Mississippi River Project flood". Keep in mind if there are 2.0 Mcfs of water flowing down RRL- that means there would be in the neighborhood of 2.8Mcfs above ORCS. That's very close to the maximum it was designed for.
Click here for PDF of original design criteria
Go to page 3 to see the diagram. (I'm almost certain this was posted earlier- my apologies in advance)
-edited for incorrect units

Tgrbait,
I dont know of any areas that are flooded in Concordia/Tensas Parish except for land on the un-protected side of the levee. I dont even think the Tensas river is at flood stage.

The Tensas River is still in its original banks. My house is on a bluff overloooking the Tensas on 425 heading towards Sicily Island.

For anyone interested, this link has a lot of good info about the near failure of the ORCS and its rehabilitation
