Hopefully there won't be any more rain in the Ohio Valley and further north in the Mississippi Valley.

Well I think most realize this is more than a normal spring flood. But people are freaking out about something they should already be aware of...itd be like someone living in Key West going "wait, wtf is this hurricane doing coming here??"

This may be the biggest flood ever. Supposed to be 8 feethigher than the highest ever at Natchez.

The Morganza floodway is larger than the one near New Orleans and flows into the Atchafalaya and eventually down to Morgan City. The one near New Orleans, Bonne Carre (?) flows into the lake and does not directly impact other communities. So Morganza is bigger but has a serious detriment, in that it floods the Morgan City area. Opening Morganza is a tough call but I think the water levels, especially near Baton Rouge, may get too high to avoid opening it.

So if the river were to jump it would do it at the ORCS, dont they have to use that to send the water to the Morganza?

No. Morganza is a separate spillway structure just above..... Morganza.

------------------------------------------
Whats left of the Miss. River after Old River Control then would get diverted further into the Atchafalaya via the Morganza Spillway if it were to be opened- not the other way around. If the river jumped, that would basically mean that the River Control structure no longer has control over the Mississippi- and the Atchafalaya would now carry the majority of the flow to the Gulf. At that point the Morganza spillway wouldn't be needed.

What did you guys do in 1993? There was a hellacious flood on the Mississippi. Did that not cause problems in Louisiana?

The '93 flood was largely caused by the Missouri River. The Ohio River was either normal or lower than normal that year. The net result was a really bad flood in MO, IA and IL; but didn't cause a problem in LA. No spillways were opened here that year.

The beef locals have with opening the Morganza is that the floodway area is MUCH larger than the Bonnet Carre and is used for farming and grazing. There's nothing much in the Bonnet Carre floodway aside from a few camps, a campground and some fill dirt operations. Using the Morganza floodway also causes other rivers to back up and flood homes and camps.

I can confirm that organizations such as FEMA is anticipating the Morganza Spillway will be opened. Contingency plans are being prepared.

Get your flood insurance paid up. Unless the projections change, it's about to get real.

Emergency declarations will likely be coming from the parishes very soon.

A couple things to mention about the vidalia and surepounding area situation

previous years during floods the surrounding rivers (black, little, ouchitas, red, ect had a ton of water in them that compounded the flooding, that's not the case now.
Corr of engineer guy that my dad is friends with in greenville says they are confident levees will hold. That is the scare ...a breach, not over topping.
A breach south of vidalia would put 3 to 4 foot of water in the vast majority of concordia Parrish, however levees along black river near jonesville would most likely keep Catahoula Parrish dry. A levée breach north of Natchez miss is a different animal.

Let's just hope levees man the frick up and do their job.

I didn't realize so many people from that vicinity posted here. I don't know many that post from LaSalle at all. I know a good many folks in Catahoula.
