In Natchez the highest the river has ever been is 58 feet. Its at 50 right now and forecasts are for it to reach 65-70 feet by the 21st. The LA side could be a total disaster.
In Louisiana where is the closest town outside of the river flood plain? Jena? I know that where we hunt in Southeast Arkansas they are telling people a couple of counties away in Ashley and Drew counties to expect a possible influx of people from Chicot and Desha counties along the river. It doesn't sound like they have a tremendous amount of confidence in the levees there.

What do I need to worry about in Abbeville? Vermilion River on one side of my house, and I have a small coulee on the other. Right south of HWY14

Sorry, perhaps I didn't clarify that properly. Closest towns to Natchez-Vidalia area that are out of the floodplain on the Louisiana side.

Nothing right now. If the spillway is open and the ACOE has a malfunction at the flood gates you might want to pay attention. Just be smart and pay attention to things going on upstream of you.

I live in between Clayton and Sicily Island. They only way we will be screwed is if a levee breaks. Vidalia maybe screwed especially the riverfront area since they bulit outside of the levee.
But the Surronding area Ferriday, Sicily Island, Jonesville should be ok unless they get hell of a backwater or a levee breaks.

Waterproof does have a levee. There is a spot just South of Great River Grain that has been suspect for years. This flood has a good chance of exposing that weak spot.
I am still vaguely familar with some landmarks...Goldman's, etc. I grew up on Hwy. 65, there was a small cropdusting airfield where I lived....Other than that don't remember too much about Waterproof. The Old High School was the only school when I grew up there (just to let you know how long ago that was).
But it makes me sad that all of that area might be flooded...lots of memories you know!!!
Now have to worry bout B.R. cause that's where my Dad is

Then yeah, Jena, Harrisonburg and Sicily Island.

Yeah, quite a bit of expensive building on the river side of the levee in Vidalia. I think that stuff is as good as gone. Im no flood expert but they say it could back up to Lake Concordia, quite a few expensive homes out there.

Just read in the Natchez Democrat. A city official said that at 60', the Mississippi will be moving 2.1 million cubic feet of water a second.

Man, if we would be in trouble in Abbeville, crap would be getting awful deep.

For those asking about BR, they have issued a "High Water Safety Zone" for the BR area. This enforces towing restrictions.

I'm sure this has been discussed, but thats a lot of pages to read through.
Is there a chance of them opening the Morganza spillway?

What's the story on northern avoyelles in any of these scenarios? Effie, Bunkie, Marksville... Etc

I think that's the big question right now. An official said probably not, but that was a few days ago before the midwest got this latest deluge of rain....
It was only opened one other time, and that was in 1973, but only due to the possible failure of the Old River Control. So it has never been opened before to strictly due to high water.

quote:Yeah, Marksville is a raised area in what otherwise looks to be the Red River plain. The river took the Moncla gap to run in it's current course and never cut he land marksville sits on.
