Okay so if they open 87 of the 125 that is more than 50% open, that makes this map f'n useless!!

How useless we talking??? Does this map reflect projections if all are open?

The map reflects BC being opened at 100% and Morganza at 50%.....from what I'm hearing Morganza will opened more than that and only 28 of 350 are being opend at BC today...now I guess that could all change

I thought that they couldn't open it that much?? Man there is so much guess work in this fiasco it is insane.

You may be thinking of the ORCS

There is a statutory limit to the amount of water the Corps can send down the Atchafalaya from Old River. It is thirty percent. Congress set that.

The Corps has (I think) complete discretion in how much they can send through the Morganza Spillway.

Keep in mind that they don't just press a button to open these. They have to open them one gate at a time with very heavy cranes.

I had always understood that the Corps would fully open the Morganza but would continue to keep ORCS at the standard 70/30 split. It could very well be that my assumption was wrong, but, given current conditions, I would think they would open it up completely.

We are scheduled to make discharge measurements on the BC and Morganza spillway when it opens.

They told us that the BC will be open 100%. It will take 3 days to completely open the structure. Estimated 250kcfs to flow through spillway but could be higher depending on head pressure from river.

CORPS also said that they are going to try and keep equal amounts of water going down ORCS and through Morganza.

as of 0945 today the ORCS is flowing at 477kcfs

The Miss R at Vicksburg is predicted to peak at 2.4 million cfs.

Do the math. If only 1.5 million cfs can pass by BR that leaves 900kcfs.

900kcfs-477kcfs would leave about 423kcfs through Morganza.

Remember Morganza is gates so they can be partially open to allow flow in the spillway.

When I passed through Morgan city going back to Houma Sunday I noticed that the gate was closed on the sea wall and the water was almost at the top of the docks. It won't take much more rise to get to the bottom of that sea wall. Should be interesting to say the least when the Morganza is opened.

If they are planning to open all 350 bays, then why are they just opening 28 today?

I have worked on the river in Morgan City alot. The gates are colsed at 7 ft. The water will hit the seawall at about 7.5 to 8 feet.

We have a gage on the railroad bridge in MC. The elevation of the pier cap that our gage is on is 13.2 ft. They are calling for a crest at 12.5 to 13 feet in Morgan City.

That is alot of water.

They're saying they could have up to 8' of water on the sea wall...we'll see

Should be interesting to see how much rise we see in the intracoastal here in Houma.

Does anyone know where the stream guages are in the atchafalaya? Can they measure flows at both spillways? would be cool to see how much the basin knocks off the peak flows from ORCS/Morganza to Morgan City. I get a little excited at the chance to analyze some data...

Do not know the answer to that one. I am sure it has something to do with head pressure and scour of the spillway near the structure.

My guess would be that they open the 28 spreadout across the whole structure to let some water in. Then wait to allow the level in the spill to rise a certain amount and then open more bays.

Just my opinion don't hold me to that one.

So if Morganza has 125 gates and 4800cfs (600kfcs/125) pass through each gate then they would open 88 gates to reach the 423kfcs to make sure BR is under the 1.5 million cfs.
