How much advantage for Commissioner (waivers)?

While I would never want to be Commissioner of a league because of the petty whining at times, just wondering how much of an advantage they have?

For my CBS league, I've noticed our Commissioner often does his add/drop immediately after the waivers run. No issues there and other owners do this also (as would I if awake after midnight).

Twice this year, the Commissioner got a player via waiver claim over me. I somewhat rarely use waiver claims and was around 5th priority both times. I'm guessing he can see the waiver claims in place at midnight and then decide if he needs to burn a waiver or just wait until shortly after they run.

Is this applicable to every league? Any other advantages?

Commissioner shouldn't be able to see who has placed what waiver claim. If he can, that's an unfair advantage and you should move platforms

Edit: Tell your commish to switch to FAAB for waivers. High bid wins. It's the best system. And no, the commish can't see waiver claims before they are processed.

I can't speak to CBS but in Yahoo, the commissioner cannot see waiver claims before they happen and I would be very surprised if that were not the case in your CBS league.

I read some comments a while back on Reddit. I think on one of the platforms the commish used to be able to see the waiver claims...but I would bet it’s been long fixed

Most websites, at least NFL and ESPN, tell you the waiver priority order, its not a secret. Especially at this point in the season, there shouldn't be any surprises on who is getting picked up on waivers. I don't get your conspiracy?

I might be completely wrong with how CBS works. The conspiracy is that if he wants a guy, he's able to view if anyone has put in a waiver claim. If nobody has, then he just waits until they run that night (thus preserving his priority for future weeks).

OK so I have to admit that I just brushed this off without actually knowing for sure. Sorry.

I started digging further and YES you are probably correct.

I'm the commish of a Yahoo league and I am able to go to the Edit Waiver Date tool under Commish section and sure as shite, I see this:

quote:

*Players with pending waiver claims cannot be taken off of waivers and given Free Agent designation.

In this case, I can see that someone is trying to claim Green Bay D/ST.

Edit: WOW this is stupid. But even more reason to have a FAAB system in place.

How are your waivers determined? Does it change weekly or is it a seasonly rolling order?

I will give you credit, if what I am seeing is correct that does in fact tell you that someone has a waiver claim on that player now it doesn't tell you WHO has a claim on that player but still, very interesting.

It doesn't tell you which team manager and it doesn't tell you an amount if you use FAAB. So again, FAAB needs to be the new standard for waivers because it at least forces the commish to over bid.

But this is still some total bullshite that these sites would even allow this. Makes me wonder how many commissioners have been cheating with this loophole

For 20 years or almost that many, I've been the emergency back-for our league's commissioner, which means I have full Commissioner access on CBS. The Commissioner can see all waiver claims, but I have never looked at them once for the purpose of determining whether I would make a claim. If I had to look for another reason, I would only do so after making my claims for that waiver period.

, maybe you're being unduly suspicious? You have to trust the Commissioner--guy is holding the money and has the power to manipulate the system. If you don't trust the Commish, then why would you be good enough friends with him to be in a league with the guy?

Never been in a league with FAAB, so not 100% certain how it works, but..

In that scenario wouldn't that only apply in scenarios where the player the commish wants is on someone's waiver? If not, they could still bid the lowest amount, or wait for waivers to clear and snag the player via FA

correct. They could just bid 0

As for FAAB vs rolling, if you have an auction FAAB makes sense and if you have a snake draft a rolling waiver order works.

I mean, it is not a game changing loophole. I would say it gives them a slight advantage but it still requires them to wake up at 3am or whatever the time is the waiver period ends and grab the player.

Apologies for late response but wanted to thank you for the detailed reply. After the initial wave of replies that made me feel a bit stupid (partially my own fault), I had avoided this thread until now.

I was always the type of kid that didn't ask many questions in school because of the fear of it being a stupid question. I've changed on social media like TD because it's more anonymous (and don't take things as personally in older age) although admit being laughed at by the mob can still affect when/if I ask potentially stupid questions like I did here.
