21. Checkers and Chess

As much as I love a draft, it's nothing compared to an Auction. In an Auction, everyone gets a shot at David Johnson. It's a much fairer way to distribute players, its more fun, and it's even a better test of skill. It's chess compared to checkers. Try it once.

Still one spot open in The Auction League, kids. For all the dudes that talk about how great they are at fantasy when all they've done is followed rankings and mocks in snake drafts, it's time to put your skills to a real test.

Much quicker than a snake. Usually less than 2 hours. Very fast paced.

You can try a mock for free in the ESPN draft lobby to try it out and get the hang of it.

shite no auctions take almost twice as long from what I've seen with a similar amount of players drafted.

Really?? I don't know man pretty rare for an Auction pick to go longer than a minute. There's always a few assholes in a snake that take the full 2 minutes or whatever for every pick. That shite adds up over 15 rounds or so

ETA: at any rate it feels much quicker because you are involved in every pick whereas a snake you sit around for 12-20 picks twiddling thumbs

If you're doing an auction online, Each time a new bid is made the clock goes back to15 seconds.. For a snake most are gonna be able to pick within 30 seconds if they are paying attention even a little you will know who you are targeting. By the time your pick comes up the decision should be made IMO.

We do a live auction and it takes forever. Half is because of format, half is because of drinks. It's the best way.

Oh I completely agree and I always pick right away, but you know that isn't the case for everyone.

Hell, if any one team in a snake takes the full clock each round that's 30 minutes right there.

And pretty sure the Auction clock only goes back up to 10 seconds once it's down to a couple of teams bidding and even like 5 seconds once the clock goes all the way down and someone bids at the last second.

Again, whatever the actual time, an Auction flies by because the pace is so fast where a snake you end up sitting around waiting the vast majority of the draft.

I've been pushing for an auction for 5 years now in all of my leagues and no one will do it

I've always felt the opposite auction seems to take wayyyy too long. any irl draft has me wanting to gtfo at the 2/3 mark though unless we are talking 10 or less squads in the league.

If it took 5 hours for y'all to do a snake draft, you don't want any part of an auction draft.

Auctions don't take long if you fill your roster out first you can just leave the draft

Auction is so much better. You get the players you want. In snake, your entire team is determined by your draft slot.

We do our 12 team auction draft live. It's around the table format. It normally takes us about 5 to 6 hours mainly because there is too much fireball involved

Yeah I've never done a live auction but can imagine that would run long.

But all this talk about Auctions being too long just sounds like excuses to me. At worst they take a similar time than snake.

I've only done it for baseball, not football, but live auction drafts take for fricking ever.

Everything goes a lot faster online, with enforced time limits, etc.

That said, it's way more challenging and fun than a regular snake draft.

I always have wanted to do an auction draft where you actually bring cash to the draft. Everybody has to spend a minimum of $100 or some arbitrary number, but you actually buy your players. All money goes into the league prize pool, but if you want to spend $500 and have a completely stacked team you can. Could potentially make for some interesting strategies.

I could see it being quite entertaining in a league of close friends.
