I don't know if this quote from Boogie is Encouraging or Discouraging

Responding to a question on what it will take to get a win streak going.
On the one hand he does appear to recognize that the things the coaches are asking him to do lead to success. On the other hand doing it is a chore to him. But if he buys in enough maybe the boring routine will reduce some of his emotional chaos.
The quote is from his post game interview video LINK
quote:
Just consistency. We struggle after the half in a lot of games...consistency. That's the main thing, finding that consistency on a nightly basis. Doing the same things over and over again that we know are making us win games. We kind of shy away from it sometimes, get bored with it, but I'm ok with it being boring as long as it's resulting in a win. Just gotta be happy with being bored I guess.

I find that encouraging. I think we all know that doing monotonous or high effort things are boring/tedious and we shy away from them, it's just human psychology.
But being able to recognize that those actions lead to positive results will lead to the team doing them more. Especially if we win some more games.

He had another quote I heard on the radio tonight about defense. Something along the lines of "The NBA is getting away from playing defense and everyone just tries to outscore each other. So if you can score really well and get a couple stops, you don't have to play much defense. Just get a couple stops."
I didn't really know what to think of that. Seemed concerning.

I mean I think it is relatively accurate though.
Look at the Houston game. The difference in that game was one maybe two defensive stops.
Unfortunately, playing good defense is a lot of hustling and can be very tiring. You don’t have to be an elite defense if you are scoring like this team is. An average defense is enough. Unfortunately sometimes we look well below average, and are on the wrong side of a huge turnover margin.

that's pretty much how most nba games go. No defense until the last 3 minutes of the game, in the regular season.
There's no defense being played this early in the season. You'll see that 3 minute stretch out to 6 or 7 minutes late in the season, and then pick up a lot more once the playoffs start.

He also has taken ownership of turnover problem in today’s paper. That’s a step forward, I hope.

So conitnuing with this quote, Boogie basically repeated it to Kushner today:
quote:
DeMarcus Cousins today said the #Pelicans have struggled with "a lot" with consistency. "We play the right way three games and play the wrong way for four games. We need to find that consistency and be OK with being a boring team who plays the right way every night."

To be fair to Boogie I think it's one of those things where he thinks he's saying something positive, but it's really tone deaf. Winning basketball is hard and usually requires sacrifice. The glory, if it comes at all, comes at the end of the season, not in individual games.

I think he is trying to acknowledge that they have a problem and they know the solution, but implementing it is not fun. The hope early on was that bringing in outspoken vets with work ethic in Tony Allen and Rondo would help with this process.
The first time he said this I appreciated it and saw it as a positive. Admitting/identifying there is a problem is always the first step. The fact he is still acknowledging the problem and taking responsibiltiy for it is a good thing. However, at some point it just becomes lip service if he is not willing to put in the work to the make the necessary changes.

In short, "I'm not coachable."

Yeah I don’t think he is articulating his message well. I thiik he is trying to be positive also.

Dude needs a shrink. Spends the whole game bitching at the refs or screaming at the opposing bench. A decent coach could do so much with him.
