Last night for the first time. Got there for our reservation and were seated promptly in the little room to the left of the door. I liked it. Nice a cozy.

We had calamari and a shrimp remoulade for apps. Both were very good. Split a Caesar. It was just ok.

I had a strip, wife had a filet. Both were delicious. However my strip was cooked a little past medium rare on one end. And it was completely devoid of any fat. My favorite part of the strip is that first bite of fat on the point end. It was otherwise delicious and perfectly seasoned. Just a tad overdone and no fat.

All that said, I prefer Ruth's Chris or Dicke Brennan's. we were also rushed in and out. Apps came out within 5 minutes of ordering, plates cleared, immediately returned with the salad, and then that was done, they immediately appeared with the steaks. It took exactly one hour for cocktail and meal and we were hoping for a longer relaxing time.

They hand cut their meat, is my understanding. Personally, I do not want to be chomping on fat at a nice restaurant, but to each his own. I have never felt rushed at Mr. John's, but our food has always come out timely. Were you drinking while there? What time was your reservation?

And by drinking, i don't mean 1 drink at the bar before dinner.

If you want to dine longer, don't order all at the same time. Put them on your schedule. Problem solved.

Had a cocktail at the table when we say. I had an old fashioned wife had a glass of champagne. Waiter brought our bottle of wine, uncorked and poured it before cocktails were done. When we orders we tried to just order apps, but he sort of talked us into ordering by suggesting he'd take his time and we had him all night.

The courses literally came immediately upon completion. Like they'd pick up the app plates, walk off and immediately return with salads.

The steak was good, but slightly overdone. He clearly just wanted to turn the table. They may have also thought we were tourists until it came out that we had several mutual restaurant friends in common.

As for fat, a strip should have a little bit. At least that's always why I've lined them.

I'm having Ruth's Chris for lunch Wednesday and will order the same dishes for direct comparison.

The food coming out fast is the most bizarre complaint I've ever heard. Followed by no fat on a NY Strip.

I think our waiter was just a douche. When we told him we'd never been there before, he went on and on about how it's a local secret and they got lots of big shots like the Brennan's, the Marcellos and lots of judges and attorneys from the CBD. He also had a fake accent.

It's not "food coming out fast" it's rushing two people through the meal in record time.

Um, this dude has a legit complaint. If I'm having a nice date with my wife at a good restaurant, I don't want to feel like I'm being herded in and out like cattle. If you want the super fast food coming out on top of each course and being rushed, just go eat at Outback.

I've found that if I'm at a restaurant that I'm not all that familiar with and I want a relaxing night, I just tell the waiter that we are not in a hurry and want a slow paced evening or something along those lines.

Its a small place, and if the reservations are full, there has to be some sense of urgency for the wait staff in order to please everyone and stay on schedule. That is what happens at this place.

If this was last night, I think you are the victim of Graduation weekend. I can't stand ultra quick service. It's worse then a long wait. IMO I've never been to Mr. John's as I have no love for steakhouses in general.

If a place feels like they are rushing you, stagger your order. I rarely order my apps at the same time as my entree.

I had the same problem the first time we went to 2John's in Bossier. From the time we were seated until the time we got out check was lass than 1 hour- that was apps, entree and dessert. I called ahead an had a bottle of wine at the table when we got there, and we still had half the bottle when we were done. We sat our asses at that table and finished our wine.

It was a much nicer pace when we went back the second time.

As do I ... At least the one downtown. But Mr. John's is pretty good.
