Exactly, he asked Tony if he minded after he had already been dicking her. He should have asked Tony before ever pursuing her.
A respect thing.
Tony didn’t give a frick about the timing or procedure of it. He just got it in his head that she was his property, after he had cut her loose, and that councilman crossed him by taking his property.
Tony the sad clown.
Tony the petty obsessive.
Tony the homicidal manic.
Take your pick.

He's not thinking rationally. Also he struggles when other people are happy. Remember thanksgiving dinner with Janice and Bobby. She's finally found a happy place and Tony can't stand it, so he tears her down and she loses it. IMO it's his darkest moment of the series.
Absolutely agree. I despised Janice and even with all the murder and fricked shite he did I hated watching that scene. For some reason I sort of cheered for him throughout the series but after the scene I thought ok well he's just a sorry piece shite frick him

Janice is easily my least favorite character. Honestly I grinned with Tony when he set her off in that dinner scene.

This question is exactly what makes the Sopranos so great. The short answer is Tony is a sociopath. But yet somehow we are drawn to him. And we try to justify his actions.
It’s like we are pulling for this maniac to succeed and trying to figure out why he would make some of these odd decisions. We have to remember who Tony is.

I’m about halfway through season 4 (this is my first time to watch any episode). I’ve really enjoyed this show, so far.
Is it worth finishing? Seems to be bogged down. Trying to view cam and the big nose ponytail dude as sex symbols is getting difficult.

We're at the same spot you are (our fifth or sixth viewing).
It gets better. The Carm/Furio relationship doesn't last forever. If you can handle Richie/Janice/Ralphie, you can power through Carm/Furio.

A meta moment this weekend when we got to the mob wives conversation about Bill/Hillary/Monica. Carm-Falco sticking up for Hillary twenty-five years before she played Hillary on FX.

You mean Tony Uncle Tony or Tony Uncle Johnny?

I'm currently in season 4 on my first REwatch, and I just recently saw this episode. I felt like Tony loved her, and because of that he had to completely cut ties with her which is why he went so overboard making sure she did not contact him (by sending Sil to basically threaten her). Furthermore, when the councilman started seeing her, you could tell Tony wasn't completely okay with it when he was telling him they started seeing each other. Then that song came on, and just set Tony off and he lost his shite like he always does, and went whip the shite out of the councilman.

Season 4 was by far the worst season. It gets back on track in season 5.

He beats the Assemblyman who is having a relationship with the Russian girl
On the rewatch, you pick up some foreshadowing here and there. When Otter is discussing Irina with Tony in the locker room after the shvitz, Tony is putting on his belt as he hears about their affair. The belt that he later pulls off to whip Otter like a rented mule.
