This is true in almost every state with a similar football powerhouse. The driving issue is not politics, the issue has been for both of the last two coaches, the AD making the decision. I love Skip to death but he bucked the entire coach selection team consisting of board members, the president and the chancellor just to say he picked his guy (Les). Completely ego driven. Couple that with the very public stupidity that took place before and after Miles was fired and you get to our current situation. The math isn't hard there. If you had Woodward in place prior to Miles getting fired we would be in a much different situation.
