Intermittent Fasting

Over the past year and a half I have been lifting weights and doing 30 minutes of cardio 4 to 5 days a week . I have dropped almost 50 lbs on the scale just eating Whole Foods and watching my portions. I need to loose about 30 more . Yes I was pretty overweight . I have hit a snag and am not loosing it on the scale anymore. I probably cheat a little more on the weekends than a did at first . I also have been hitting the booze a little more . I was thinking about trying intermittent fasting just to try something new to get jump started again . And limit the weekend cheating and booze .However I workout in the morning, was thinking of eating one big meal in the early evening. Is it not good to workout and then not eat ? Or does it matter ? I know I’ll be hungry as hell all day but am willing to try it . Thanks

You'll be fine.

Cons:
- Less energy to move weight
- More muscle breakdown / less ability to gain muscle / possible loss of muscle
- You'll be starving if you workout in the morning and dont eat till the evening
ETA: I've done IF for months with little to no results other than more restrictive life style and less energy for workouts

Maybe tighten up on your cheat foods and add a an extra 15 minutes of cardio.

I've done it for years with no problems with my workouts

I did IF a few years back. Similar situation, had been in the gym about 3 days a week, and running a 5k about 3 days a week. Seems like Tues/Thu were when I would lift and run. I did IF, and had my dinner around 7:00 at night, and wouldn't eat again until after my lunch time gym session/run. I was eating between 1:00 and 7:00 every day.

I know a little about EtOH. The problem really is if you are drinking, you’re probably “cheating “ more than you think (or care). Also there are quite a few calories in there. Willing to bet skipping drinking will be more effective. This coming from someone who really only eats one meal a day...

You’re removing a meal, breakfast, from your diet. That’s all IF is. You still have to hit your calorie goal

Thanks , yea I may just tighten up on the booze. Those extra calories are what is probably stalling me . Just thought I’d try the IF to try something new to get jumpstarted again.

Lifting and running in a fasted state is wonderful. I'm never sluggish or hungry in the slightest. It really puts you in a great mental state knowing that it's 1pm and you're -1000 calories for the day.

If you've lost 50 pounds over the past year and a half and aren't losing anymore then you probably just need a break. You've done great but if you push it too far you will just damage your metabolism and gain back a bunch of rebound weight. Take a break for about 6 months and try to eat at your new maintenance level while continuing to lift weights. This will give your body some time to adjust to its new settling point weight. 6 months from now go back on a diet and try to lose a few more. This method will be much better for long term success

To each their own I suppose. I did it for months and it was fine, but I just didn't see any benefit. I've always found I have a lot more energy and mental clarity sticking to multiple smaller meals spread throughout the day, rather than starving myself and then eating larger meals.
Also, the data, from everything I've seen, supports the theory of well fed muscles performing and growing more efficiently. If you're doing IF, it seems likely a better idea to schedule your workout after you've eaten.

quote:Ridiculous. The guy says he was pretty overweight (which these days almost certainly means obese) and 50 pounds over a year and a half is less than a pound a week, which while commendable, is nowhere near any sort of 'danger level'.

Based on limited info in OP I would suggest eliminating the booze.

I'm a believer in intermittent fasting for a multitude of reasons.
The two most rewarding reasons were my weight loss(15lb in 3 months), and my severe acid re flux went away.
I would float my hours from 16:8 all the way up to 24 hours.
The fact that there was a 5 year stretch of me waking up to acid destroying my esophagus to it completely being gone told me all I needed to know about it.
There are studies that show it even helps with muscle retention and growth. Not the opposite, which you would assume.
I don't feel weak, and my muscles haven't shrunk.

I’ve done intermittent fasting, 16-8, and it worked great for me. I ate, and still eat, a clean diet. I would recommend as that, combined with exercise, helped me to get down to a size 30 waist and weight around 140.
