When was the last time the Saints went into the draft with this many needs?

Feels like its been awhile. They have almost always filled most of their needs, at least in some capacity, before the draft, letting them go BPA.

This year the cap crunch has left them with 2, at least in my opinion, fairly dire needs at CB and LB. And there are a bunch of other depth needs as well at WR, DL, OL depth, etc.

Just feels like this is the first time in awhile that there are certain positions that they will NEED to fill early.

Not under CSP have we had so many apparent holes before no doubt.

I see the same two glaring holes as everybody else.
But perhaps LB'er is not as dire as we see it. Baun Ellis, Hansen or even Dowell may already be in their plans for the 2nd Lb'er spot.

2006...we literally traded down twice to pick up starters from other teams.

wasnt for a draft, but when Randy Mueller took over he was signing a new free agent every day for about 2-3 weeks

Only dire needs imo are CB and LB.

Need a starter at CB and our other starter is a complete moron so maybe two.

Everywhere else we just lack depth that we had last year.

Thankfully, most of our needs are depth. I know we might get some good value at WR with pick #28, but I hope we stick to our board & draft the best LB/CB available. Either that or trade back.

Who knows...we might have to trade up from #28 to get our CB target.

This is a pretty damn important draft & we already have some decent draft ammo. I'm expecting some of our 2022 draft picks to be dealt in the upcoming draft. Not the 1st rounder, but nothing else would surprise me. We'll have a 2nd, 2 3rds, & 2 4ths...you know it's coming.

My opinion on draft importance for all positions
Dire Needs
CB, LB

High Needs
WR
DT/DE
OT/OG

Medium Needs
QB, RB

Low Needs
S, TE

No Needs
FB, OC, LS, K, P

And the only reason why we had to sign so many that year was that the prior regime decided to trade multiple years worth of draft picks to take one player. Thank God we aren't doing those types of moves these days.

What? 2017 we were in worse shape

You could say that for the majority of 2014-2016 too

Yep. 2015 was pretty damn bad. If it weren't for Brees...that team would've been lucky to win 2 games.

This is still a pretty good roster, & we've been in much worse situations going into the draft (under CSP).

I don’t think we have a ton more needs than normal years. I think it’s the sense of unknowing at the quarterback position and salary cap issues that lead us to worry more about other positions.

CB is an absolute need. LBer has bodies, we just aren’t sure about starters. DT is a question because we lost a mainstay, but we have bodies there too.

Not talking about the end record.
That's hindsight.
Talking about going into a season.
It's all on record right here on TD's for you to look at.
Don't remember any year with so many holes and loses.
Please prove me wrong. Won't bother me at all.

Let me expand for you to compare without winn/loss reference.

No returning #1 Qb
No returning FB
No returning #1 TE
No known #2 WR
No returning punter
No known #2 LB'er
No known #3 LB'er
No known #2 CB
Fewer CB's on roster I can remember
Fewer vet LB'ers on the roster I can ever remember.

That's just off the top of head.

Yes I’ve been pounding the table that the Saints would have filled most of their needs by now. I thought for sure they would have a 2nd vet corner, linebacker, and receiver by now.
I guess they will wait till after the draft and invest in those areas if needed. It’s obvious to even the casual fan we need a top end corner and linebacker.

Could even say we need a 2nd receiver, DT, and OG. It’s scary that several positions we are counting on guys that either have not shown much like Braun, or W.O. like D.Harris and Callaway that can’t stay heathy.
They all could surprise thou. Lots to look for this season.

How the hell is QB a medium need? you better draft a defense that gives up zero points because crab legs ain't going to score many points.

The saints just need to go BPA and we should stop worrying about the holes. If we are being honest with ourselves we are not expecting to compete for a SB next year. If we have to go into the season starting P-Rob and Baun it isn’t the worst thing in the world. We get to see what we have in Baun and P-Rob actually played better last year

This. Do not trade up and just use the next two years to build on the roster. Our salary cap issue isn't going away next year.
