He would be my first pick to trade up for to pick as my future qb. He is better than any qb on the roster

Too difficult to evaluate. There’s a reason scouts projected Burrow #1, but are having a very difficult time evaluating Jones. May be worth trading up for in the second.

Likely wouldn’t need to trade up and could be there at pick 28.

If he’s there a 28 then take him if that’s who they want but don’t trade up for him. Too many unknowns.
He never got hit, never had to lead a game winning drive, never faced any type of adversity as a QB.
He’s Matt Leinhart playing on a team loaded with 1st round draft picks

Winston and Hill is our QBs. Used pick for best player available.

This is a perfect choice for a pocket QB. He is poised in the pocket and accurate. May not be a starter out the gate but with time he could be great.
Saints wont pick him though.

Except Jones will probably go in the top 15

Most of the mocks have several QBs, including Jones, going in the top 15. With all the crazy QB trades, demands and FAs, I think we may see an early run on QBs.
I agree that unless something crazy happens, Winston & Hill are our QBs next year.
As for Jones, with all respect to TideSaint, I don’t think he’s anything special. I know TS keeps comparing him to Burrow, but Burrow seemed to make the players around him better and had a great play caller and it all just clicked. Jones seems like the opposite whose teammates make him better. No stats. No deeper analysis than that. Simply the eye test. Jones may end up being a good QB, I just think most feel like he’s more Mark Sanchez and less Mark Brunell.

Yeah the Burrow comparison ridiculous... Jones comparable to AJ McCarron... this could be LSU bias but I wasn’t impressed with him at all... the Saints best chances I think or with Winston and Hill ... drafts whichever one the QBS that were “supposed “ to go first day in the later rounds...

This thread is bad and you should feel bad.

So Joe Burrow was throwing the ball to 3 probable first rounders (Chase, Marshall, Jefferson) for an entire season whereas Jones was throwing to Devonta Smith and this crew for 75% of his season:
Slade Bolden
John Metchie
Miller Forristall
Jahleel Billingsley
And you think Burrow made the guys around him special, yet this collection of 3-star talent made Jones special?
Seriously?

Heard on the radio yesterday Bears will trade up and he will be the 4th qb taken with the 12th pick. If we want him we need to be at 11.

One of my own personal evaluations is to look at the success of the team with and without the player in question. Burrow and Brees are both good examples of how this works.
Both players had great success in college with teams that struggled prior to these players success and there teams went back to struggle after they left. This is an indication that the players were the reason for the team improvement and not system.
When you look at teams like Alabama, Florida, and USC previously, there QB were always high on the draft board but there teams success never changed after the player left the team. The player did not have the same impact in the NFL they had in college because their success came from the system that the coach implemented.
Take a QB from a team that has a one or two year success and nearly every time the QB has "IT" that makes them a good NFL QB.

While not his fault, the collection of great talent around him makes the INDIVIDUAL evaluation of him difficult. He had great numbers. But if you dig deeper, you see that a high % of his attempts were at or behind the LOS. 34% (Compared to Burrow who only had 17% of such attempts). Also, over half (54%) of his passing yard came via YAC. Burrow had 46%. Now in Jones' defense, Justin Herbert had similar (though not quite as high) numbers in those categories and he was the NFL ROY.
Maybe the bigger "worry" is that because Alabama's OL was so good last season only 11% of Jones's throws came from outside the pocket. This is kind of where Burrow separated himself a comparison. Burrow was tremendous when the play broke down (even better than when he was in the pocket) and most of his huge plays came on plays where he had to escape and be a playmaker. Now, you can't fault Jones because his OL was so good it made it unnecessary for him to leave the pocket, but it makes the evaluation more difficult.
The talent discrepancy is not going to be anywhere close to as vast in the NFL as it was at Alabama. So, while Jones was incredibly accurate and efficient, the question has to be asked "is that because he was under relatively little stress at Alabama because of the talent around him"?
At its most basic level the question surrounding Jones remains "is this a guy who can still make plays when everything around him isn't perfect?" That's what teams have to answer

Average depth of target:
Jones: 8.57
Burrow: 9.62
Targets 11+ yards down the field:
Jones: 75.76 Adjusted completion %
Burrow: 70.37 Adjusted completion %
Targets 20+ yards down field
Jones: 64.4 adjusted completion % (ADOT 33.4 yards)
Burrow: 63.08 adjusted completion % (ADOT 31.8 yards)
There's no argument that Jones is more mobile than Burrow, he isn't. But burrow's mobility is average for an NFL QB where Macs will be below average, simply put I don't think either one is mobile enough to make a huge difference with their legs. I've watched every snap of Mac's career and his best attribute to me is that he stays in the pocket. He was elite at avoiding the rush within the pocket and keeping his eyes down field and still going through progressions. Burrow had an historical 2019. I don't think what Mac did was any less impressive, it just seemed that way because he was following Tua while LSU had been a stagnant offense for a decade, even with Burrow at the helm. LSU went from the valley to the peak on offense while Alabama had a quick day hike to the peak from base camp. Mac played the majority of the season with fewer weapons than Burrow had and still put up elite production on the back of elite efficiency. The arm talent is at minimum equal to Burrow, the brain talent is at minimum equal to Burrow, so do you pass that up because he's simply a below average runner instead of an average one?
quote:
Containing average arm strength, he’s an underrated deep passer that’s able to layer the ball into adequate spots for perimeter targets. As an anticipatory thrower, he’s well above average with “about to be open” throws of where he releases the ball while estimating where targets are going to be. Balance and savvy within the pocket are top-tier traits, as he’s an excellent mover within the pocket and knows how to create windows of opportunities to release throws with a cleaner view than previously offered. Jones isn’t a passer that will make a living creating off-script plays outside of structure, but he has enough mobility to take advantage of the grass offered to him. Jones is a passer that will need the three P’s surrounding him (playmakers, play-caller, protection) at high-tier levels in order to see his full potential on a consistent basis, as he isn’t a thrower that will be able to overcome those elements being at a lower-tier level.
Here's a writeup on him from a draft site, and he sounds like a perfect fit in New Orleans

Ole Miss tied the game in Oxford with 11 minutes left. TD on the next possession. Ole Miss made a field goal when they got the ball back. TD next possession.
Georgia was beating bama at the half. He threw a 90 yarder to Waddle to 4 minutes left in the third to take the lead and then scored on the next two possessions.
Florida brought the SECCG to within 1 score twice in the 4th quarter. TD on both following possessions for Bama
There was adversity, it just didn't impact him at all.
