I do believe that has become somewhat of a TD myth.
The 85 limit isn't changing.
Something has to change. You can't say this year doesn't count for your eligibility, and then do nothing. Where are the players that want to return going to go?
This is going to cause a multi-year clusterfrick.
Most people assume that there will be some temporary 85 scholarship relief, though what that means is unknown.

I started a post about a week ago. A friend of mines who follows Miami said Manny talked about the ncaa giving extra scholarships this year. I haven't heard it anywhere else so who knows

quote:It is November. Not Feb. This is recruiting. You have to recruit the recruits all the way through. Declaring a disaster in Nov. is like declaring a hurricane evacuation due to a dust storm in the Sarhara.
have 1 single solitary OL locked into our 2021 class. Signing 1 OL is absolutely disastrous roster mismanagement.
quote:yep. No argument there. However, every miss EVERY YEAR hurts us going forward. It is the way of CFB. Every year is high turnover (if you have good players). Period. The same things were said when Studwra came in. The same when Grimes left. It's every year. As I said in another posts, several over the years actually, you have to recruit OL (especially OTs) like you do the stud QB or RB. You need two, every year essentially, and there are far fewer of them out there.
If we miss, we better have some tricks up our sleeve or we are going to have scary issues there going forward.
quote:again, Cregg got us from the point where we had a C playing LT and a C who is now an OT in the NFL. It was Cregg that turned the "project" and "last in" Cushenberry into an NFL talent. If you look around CFB he's done very good things comparatively and it is steadily improving. The development has been pretty damn good; recruiting is a reset every year so the development, just like recruiting, never stops. Yes he's doing excellent. Yes- he can frick it up at the last minute.
but to say definitively that Cregg is doing an "excellent" job when we have a potential disaster around the corner is crazy.
Every year can ruin you in college ball. Every. Every recruiting class is either a potential championship or a disaster. Being in between doesn't exist when a championship is the goal.

I think cregg is a great technical coach. That's not a question
Can he recruit at an elite level
Anthony bradford was 370 pounds as a recruit.

Thought this thread was about a guy with last name Gilbert...

Part of what needs to change is overall strategy. You've posted similar and I've posted about this before: Once you've got your targets or bare minimum "fill in" with OTs and play them at OG until developed. If you are following that strategy you don't recruit a Martinez. The overall way of approaching "3 years of OL" every year needs to change.
Resources needs to change too. A huge % of the recruiting budget will go into a stud RB and QB (or two). We need to be devoting the resources to recruit TWO of the top OTs every year from all over the country. Yes, that will take away travel and other resources from other nation wide recruits. But pick your poison. You want to build up depth with 3 ready to go, SEC level OTs on the team year after year you are going to have to recruit 2 top OTs every year.
I'd say he's somewhere between "good" and "very good". Without a doubt you need a very good 5 in the SEC. But the OTs will define that best 5. It's the nature of the beast. Getting Dumervil last year was great. We needed 2 of him.
Getting Dumervil was a big step improvement over the previous year. We struck out on OTs. Even though I think Perry has a lot of potential, it will take years to realize it fully.
So, as far as recruiting we went from strikeout on OTs to Home Run (Dumervil) the next year. Prior to that it was Grimes recruiting (Grimes left in Dec '17 just prior to ESD for the 2018 class). So if we get Leigh and Dellinger? That's a home run and a triple in his 3rd class.
Kind of hard to argue with development plus recruiting getting better year over year.
The story isn't over. But like many of his OL, Cregg is making progress in his recruiting every year. And the idea that it is bad if an OL isn't starting by his 2nd year is a knock on Cregg is retarded. If recruiting doesn't improve we will be starting guys their 2nd year before they are ready all over the place and it will be very ugly.
So good recruiting, with a good volume of 4-5 OL a year defines longer development and a better 5. If you recruit well, with volume, guys will have to wait longer. The only way to get insta-starters every year AND recruit 4-5 every year means your starters from the previous year are benched. It doesn't add up and stems from knee-jerk reactions from people who have never seen a freshman OT go against a Jr. DL.
And there is one other aspect of coaching that gets missed... the "offseason coaching". If you want to be a good coach at the Div-I level you will find a way to break the offseason coaching rules. This is where the S&C staff and analysts come in. You make sure the S&C coaches know what you want worked on as a priority. You devise a drill schedule, coach the analyst or trainer on how to run it, and make sure your OT gets off the couch and goes and does it. If he doesn't, you make sure you know where that put him in the pecking order. It's the OL version of 7X7's or juggs machine.
I thought Grimes sucked in this aspect. I know he sucked actually. That's why in game 2 every year Grimes was still trying to figure who his best 5 were while Wisc is sacking our QB. Now, the jury is still out on Cregg here. We had our 5 last year with Ingram waiting on a TX DA. Players like Cush came into the fall ready to work on being an OL, not trying to become an OL. But then there's Kardell and Martinez. So can't quite tell yet.

The OL coach is not the only person that recruits OL. He has some responsibility for it, but not solely.
He’s certainly responsible for their scouting and their development.
But position coaches don’t just recruit their position.

Excellent post and my thoughts exactly.
Misses in recruiting are going to happen.
My opinion is to recruit more OT and let them play OG until they are ready to play OT in the SEC.
I would not recruit very many OG unless they are elite and almost can t miss in my evaluation.

Current jrs, sophs, frosh and incoming recruits are taken into account towards the 85 number. Current srs will be allowed back even if numbers total more than 85. Only the current srs are allowed as "extras" towards the 85. Biggest trickle down is how class numbers for 22 are affected. Many schools may be forced to take smaller than traditional classes for a year, maybe 2. Not really that difficult or as "landscape altering" as some proclaim. In reality it's only 1 year where teams will have more than 85. No need to make any wholesale changes to how numbers are counted. But it's the NCAA so you never know what to expect.
