That book is a piece of crap. I fell into the trap myself.

I’m down for a good story. I don’t need drama or mystery for example.
But CITR is trash.

You guys are nuts!
Seriously, that’s why we have so many flavors of ice cream. I read Catcher in the Rye when I was about 15, and it’s been with me for over 40 years. A beautiful book, imo.

Atlas Shrugged

You see? Opinions! I love the idea of Atlas Shrugged. There is a great book in there if only a good editor would get a hold of it. Between Rand’s mediocre prose, and her tendency to belabor a point, I could not get through it.

Confederacy of Dunces

Walker Percy was imposed upon, bu the dead author’s mother, to read Dunces. He had done this for random people dozens of times. He always, in good conscience, read enough to tell it was bad. Usually that took one or two sentences. Once it had taken three pages, Here is what he said about C of D:
quote:

“In this case I read on. And on. First with the sinking feeling that it was not bad enough to quit, then with a prickle of interest, then a growing excitement, and finally an incredulity: surely it was not possible that it was so good.” ? Walker Percy, A Confederacy of Dunces

The message and story of the book transcend its prose/writing shortcomings.

The Lords of Discipline by Pat Conroy always sticks out for me. Either that or The Godfather

Agreed. But I got the message a third of the way through.

Catcher in the Rye. NOT. World famous book and a must read. All serial killers have read this book. I'll give you a fair warning in advance. You will throw this book down several times vowing not to finish it, but you will pick it up again thinking something will happen. Let me know if you fell into this trap. Happy reading.

I wish I had had the nuts to write this response on my high school english test.

The Lord of the Rings

Who’s your caddy - the chapter on John Daly is incredibly funny

shite my Dad says

Windmill of the gods

Ball Four

Angels and Demons (until they end anyway)

The Bible

As for “Catcher in the Rye“...I hated damn near every second of that read. It is only outdone by “The Kite Runner” for being the worst book I actually finished.
