Wildcat is good in the summer, get a little breeze, nice views of the city.
Gus Wortham is legit now. will test your game.
Memorial get a ton of play but a good course.

Kingwood is not too far from downtown, during the weekend 25 min drive. They have 3 or 4 courses, good practice facilities.

Riverbend is one of the best tracks in the Houston area. (Located in Sugarland)

It makes you use every club in your bag and it always test your game.

Plus there are always a bunch of great guys to play with.

If I was going to join another club it would be there.

Clubcorp is a no brainer with access to all the Kingwood courses plus all the other tracts in and around Houston. I got buddies down in League City and we alternate drives to each hood and Kingwood also has a cool water park and pool.

Playing in an Am Tour event at Kingwood The Forest this weekend! How well does it dry? I guess it's all dependent on the rain we get this week, but if the rain ends on Wednesday, should it be atleast 90 degree rule by Saturday?

Kingwood tends to become a swamp with a good rainfall. But this week's forecast is all over the place with amounts.

If you’re living downtown, don’t join a club. During the week, play Wildcat and Memorial when you can get on.

Make weekend trips to Cypress, Humble, Katy, Woodlands, Lake Jackson, etc. to play some others.

I live in the loop and there isn’t a lot of good golf in the city unless you join a club. I have a group and we play different public courses and hop around to a few clubs where our friends are members.

I have a friend who tried to get me to do Clubcorp but to someone who lives and works in the city it didn't make sense.

From what I have been told you have to play weekdays (who can with traffic) or after 12 on weekends.

You can take that $400 and play in the city after work and weekend mornings at good public tracks.

There are some crazy high prices public courses though...$109 to play Black horse..No thanks.

Any Houston guys on here that can comment on Northgate CC courses and practice facilities? I haven't met anyone who as played the course.

I requested their membership info out of curiosity and their dues seem like a hell of a deal.

Northgate is a good deal. People either love or hate the course. I like the course, but you should play it first. The management does a decent job of keeping the course in good shape. They try.
It was 27 holes but after the tax day flood it dropped to 18 with a Fast 5 (practice holes).
Bonus: The owner of Northgate owns Walden on Lake Conroe. The clubs have reciprocal memberships. Walden is a challenging course, that can humble you. It’s one of my favorites in the Houston area.

Just stumbled on this thread, but golf in Houston is infinitely better than NOLA. There are tons of options. A lot depends on what part of Houston you live in. A great very affordable option is ClubCorp for private clubs that offer multiple club options in the South. Depending on your budget you can go from Uber elite like Lochinvar to very nice public courses(Wildcat).

I am in the Heights and work off Dairy Ashford exit in Energy Corridor. Not ideal locations for being able to go after work and getting some practice/ quick holes in.

For me, Riverbend and Pine Forest seem to be very good deals for what you'll get out of a membership.

Northgate is a Devlin design and there are plenty of uneven lies. Still a decent place to play though.

You can't go wrong with Pine Forrest or Riverbend.

Sugarcreek has great deals on memberships too.

I'd just play all the different courses during your tenure living in Houston. Memberships are fun to have, but when you're playing other courses you're throwing money down the drain with membership fees. Plus i think there are plenty of courses worth playing around the city if you're willing to drive for them. In no particular order:

High Meadow Ranch
Woodforest
Hearthstone (27 holes)
Meadow Brook Farms
Windrose
Cypress Lakes
Cypresswood (2 courses)
Black Horse (2 courses)
Sterling
Carlton Woods
Kingwood CC (4 courses)
The Woodlands CC
Wildcat (Highland? track has too many blind shots tho)
Memorial
Pine Forest CC

Many of the courses you list are private or semi-private.

Membership has its privileges.

You will have a hard time finding a decent weekend tee time at some of the courses he listed that aren’t private unless you are a member.
