FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear on Friday vetoed a bill pushed by Republican lawmakers to require Kentucky residents to show a government-issued photo ID in order to vote.

In his veto message, the governor said the measure would create an obstacle to voting, resulting in fewer people casting ballots and "undermining our democracy."

Beshear said the bill seeks to "resolve a problem that does not exist" because voter impersonation isn't a problem in Kentucky.

The measure passed the Senate and House by wide margins. The legislature is scheduled to reconvene April 13. Secretary of State Michael Adams urged lawmakers to override the veto.

"I ask the legislators of both parties who believe in election integrity and passed this law to override this regrettable veto, and I hope the governor will eventually join me in governing from the center," Adams said.

The bill would require voters to produce a photo ID when voting, with limited exceptions, starting with the November election.

People lacking their photo ID at the polls could vote by provisional ballot and later produce that ID to enable their ballot to be counted. Or voters could cast their ballots if recognized by an election officer, who would have to sign a document affirming to knowing the voter.

This is why you can never vote for a Democrat at the state level.

They may "seem" moderate to appeal to you, but Dems lie.

It's what they do. "By any means necessary".

I don't like the Republicans, but Democrats are the cheatingest bastards on the planet. They are going to do everything possible in order to steal the 2020 presidential election, and as many others as possible, too.

Just as we in Louisiana get the shite sandwich we deserve for having a democratic governor, Kentucky is getting what they deserve.

Exactly.

He probably thinks IDs aren't enough.

The legislature has the votes to override if they choose. But they will probably keep the issue open to use for the next governor election.

If I want to make a large purchase with a credit card, they often ask for an id. But not to vote?? W. T. F.

Good, now get rid of ID laws for private purchases of goods.

I guess we’ll never know if it’s a problem if we can’t verify whether each voter is who they say they are. Sort of circular logic there.

"The Senate voted to override Beshear's veto of Senate Bill 2, which requires voters to present government-issued photo identification in order to cast a ballot, in addition to Senate Bill 5, requiring a local government council to approve any tax increase proposed by a special taxing district, such as a sewer district or library board.

The photo ID bill was pushed by Republican supporters as a way to prevent in-person voter fraud and build public confidence in the integrity of elections. It goes into effect during the general election this November.

The House followed the Senate's lead and overrode Beshear's veto of SB 2 and SB 5 Tuesday evening."
