Could the virus bring the return of drive-in theaters?

I'm sure a lot of cinemas will have to shut their doors permanetly due to the crisis especially with all of the summer blockbusters being delayed. That leaves an opening for a niche market. It's safe too as you don't interact with fellow movie-goers.

As someone who grew up going to Drive-Ins, I'm here to tell you that it's more of a social experience than a film buff experience. I saw Star Wars in a theater and then in a Drive In, and the experiences couldn't have been farther apart. It's fine for Cheerleaders Return II, but you don't want to watch the next Chris Nolan film at a Drive In.

Probably not. Could be an interesting novelty business idea though

Agree completely. I too grew up on Drive-Ins and if you don't like noise, random headlights it won't be for you. It was most definitely a place to fellowship as much as it was to watch movies. You could send the kids to the playground (people didn't worry about creeps back in the day and you could leave them to play) and watch the film.
I doubt that the amount of land it takes to have a good drive in vs the return on investment probably isn't the greatest business model these days.

This is one thing.
Another is that drive-ins started going away in our neck of the woods (the south) when everything pretty much became air-conditioned. Back in the 50s and 60s, things weren't so much, so it was okay to go to a drive-in, turn off your car and watch a movie in the 90 degree heat, because not as many places were air-conditioned anyway, and people were used to dealing with it.
No way folks would do that today. And you can't have a drive in movie with everyone running their cars for the air-conditioning.

No. Streaming still a thing.

Yep, I remember many summer nights in the St. Bernard Drive-In just outside Arabi on St. Bernard Hwy.
We'd light up the Pic mosquito repellent coils and put them on the metal dashboard, open all 4 windows and hoped for a breeze enough to seem like it was cooler, but it wasn't.
We've gotten spoiled over the years with A/C.
ETA: Going to the drive-in when I was a kid was a treat. Todays kids would look upon it as a punishment.

being too young to have gone to a drive in, i always wondered about this part.
I mean A/C was an extreme luxury in a vehicle back then.
and even if you had it, you ain't leaving your shite running for two damn hours, are you?

I grew up those years too. Would add daylight savings time hurt. Biggest though was tv. Went from 3 Channels to cable tv and movie channels.
It was nice to be able talk without disturbing others and to drink a beer and have a smoke

Personally, I still go to drive-ins. Although my nearest one must be doing poorly when it comes to money. When I was young the drive-in would havr every single movie that was out at the theaters. Nowadays, you'll be lucky if they have 3 movies out.

I went to one in Dothan twice in the last 10 years. A 4 screen theatre. I hear that it is now closed. They're a pleasant outing when the weather is nice.

Nope, real estate is way too valuable so a drive in would have to outside of town nowadays. Also, way too many people are soft and don’t want to sit outside anymore. Just about every stadium built in the last 15+ years is either enclosed or has a retractable roof that is almost never open.
Personally I think they are an experience of their own. Too bad a lot of people have never or will never have the opportunity to go to one.

The great fun was putting 2-3 friends in the trunk with the beer

I worked on a rig in Midland right next to the drive in. We could drive up to the fence and tune in for audio. Was pretty awesome.

Along with all of the other issues already mentioned, you could never re-create the theater (or home theater) sound at a drive-in.
Back in the day you had a speaker box that you hung on the window of the car. I think the more modern ones now utilize an FM modulator to allow you to use your car radio to listen. But there isn't a way to do 5.1, 7.1, etc. surround in the car.

You know that asshat in the jacked up f250 is gonna be in the front row with that diesel idling directly vent level of the Prius behind it. Mayhem ensues.
