I don't think he's a top 10 coach. Overall, I think he is a mediocre head coach. I also think most of the coaches in the league are mediocre with some good things and some bad things. There are a handful of top flight coaches, but, for me, it's a lot more about players and support system within the organization.

Other than just being tired of him, I'm not sure why anyone is really upset with the way this team has grown under Gentry. Much of that is players being healthy and having time, so maybe not all the credit to him. But, over the past 3 years, I think he's been fine here. I don't think they need to keep him long term or anything. But it's not pitchfork time either

Some of the things I think Gentry does well:

- he understands space and how to create it on offense (Davis/Cousins stuff was awesome)
- he understands player strengths (see Zion post up article thread, putting Jrue off-ball)
- he gets his players to play for him
- he gives players and coaches autonomy, which can breed confidence

Some negatives:

- not sure how great he is at teaching his offensive scheme/ball+player movement
- too much trust of players (comments after Rockets game, some crazy shots/passes from guys at times)
- rotations can be spotty, but that's harder than I think most posters believe
- with that autonomy, there is less rigidity and clear expectations. It's a tradeoff
- fundamental belief in pace/pushing at all costs. I think it's more about tempo and being quick with actions even if it's not a quick shot. But I'm an anonymous message board poster, not a 30 year NBA coach
- in game coaching can be spotty. That happens with just about every coach

draft a point guard.
someone with a great assist to turnover ratio.

you need two pgs.

lonzo is 2.3 to 1.
3 is elite.

malachi flynn. san diego st
16 pts 5 assists.
better than 3.0 a/t
2nd rounder

We have 2 guards that literally dribble the ball off their feet and sometimes just run straight out of bounds. Fix these issues and we win games against OKC and others like the rockets and clippers

we agree. i like your part about both guys dribbling off their feet.
i proposed drafting a pg with elite assist to turnover ratio and got downvoted.

Ja is avging 7.1 asst/gm and 3.2 TOs/gm. LBJ: 10.8/4.0. Harden: 7.3/4.5
Westbrook: 7.2/4.4 Trae Young: 9.2/4.9 Lillard: 7.9/2.9

What kind of ridiculous bar are you setting acting like a 3/1 ratio is a realistic expectation...particularly for a rookie? "Just go draft John Stockton!"
I would preferwe just draft a high volume shooter that avgs 75% from 3...preferably in the 2nd round.

It's a fine line.

If we want beautiful ball movement or half court alley oops, it also means they're going to throw some into the seats or off the backboard or to the other team. Just depends on how much risk you prefer.

I'm mostly ok with it; they tend to make more plays than not. The ones off the foot are maddening, but not sure how that is on coaching.

I do think some of the quick, contested/1 on 3 jumpers are just like turnovers. And that is on coaching

even lightly contested with no teammate under but 2 defenders.

Less turnovers and less stupid 3’s would make a huge difference defensively. We are one of the worst teams in the league when it comes to transition points, and it’s b/c of turnovers and shots that are the same as turnovers.

And simply give more effort defensively. Blocking out is not a scheme or coaching area. You simply have to commit to doing it.
